Who Goes Surfing - and where??
Been in Cornwall this summer and hired a couple of SurfBoards ... got on quite well.
Come home and bought a couple of Bunty shortboards .....
Where do you all go surfing??
Closest to me is Boscombe Pier and Southbourne ....
Heard good things about Croyde (but not for beginners) and Staunton (good for beginners)
Needs to be within 2 hours travelling really ... so, Brighton is also a possibility

saunton is a good place for beginners, the wave is easy and theres plenty of room, ideally you need a longboard though 9ft plus otherwise you might get a bit frustrated not catching anything on a shortboard
croyde is good but most of the time the wave breaks in one place so gets very crowded
putsborough round the corner from croyde is also good and benefits from a wide line up
best time to go is sept/oct as the water is at its warmest and lots of low pressures bringing the swell in
most south coast spots u mention are ok but inconsistent compared 2 atlantic, if you want south coast then west wittering is worth trying out now and again or kimmeridge over towards swanage

Llangeneth (sp) on The Gower was always the nicest spot for beginners, its got consistant open faced waves and for those a bit nervous you can often stand up 'out the back' The Croyde area is good but oft filled with to**ers from the London area, who as per usual think they know more and are better than the locals.

Pete,
Serious answer from a surfer (for the last 30 odd years). For me here in Hampshire closest is Bouremouth, or West Wittering, but they are both rubbish unless you go mid winter, when you might get a wave over 3 foot !.
Cornwall is the best, and my prefered beaches with reasons are as follows.
1/. Watergate Bay, massive beach, good at all states of tide, (dumps a bit a low tide), will hold a good 10' wave, - downside is J Oliver just built a cafe there so carpark will be full of ***** and wanna be surfers in BMW's.
2/. Fistral, not as good or as big as above and gets crowded.
3/.Sennen cove - Good wave, big dodgy by the lifeboat ramp, long way !
4/.Croyde Bay - reasonable break, gets busy,
5/. Saunton - longboards only, but great for these..
