Great that we won, but it's looks like old Dougie fibbed about not getting shot down (He said he just happened to bump into a Messerschmitt).
Still, what a great man ! (If he wasn't around we might be saying
"Ja sicher, Scoobynet ist absolute toll !!).

OK, he was covering for his mate who shot him down by accident -
Spitfire turns, sees another plane at his side, opens up, blowing the plane's tail off, then "gasp", he realises he's shot down his mate Bader !!
Happily Bader bailed out, but one of his false legs fell off as he parachuted down (what a guy !!)

The story of Douglas Bader is a good one. Alas, the 2 hour documentary to 'find' his airplane was a complete bore and a waste of time.
Felt properly cheated at the end of it all when the conclusion of it all was that the thing was probably at the bottom of a lake.

Bader was arrogant though no doubt about it and he bloody well had right to be. Made most other people look weak in comparison.
Jolly good show old boy.

Debate over whether "big wings" were right or wrong would be of acedmic interest really - but as the war progressed it worked well. As said - more damage over time but less impact on the immediate raid.
Its been a good few years since I read the his biography but my recollection was that actually much of 12 group was anxious to join in but was held back (rightly so) for defence in depth.
It is frightening when you learn how very very close it was. Had Hitler not changed focus from beating the RAF to the Blitz he was just days away from reducing the RAF to an irrelevance.
my eternal thanks go to every one involved throughout WWII to ensure I can spend my days now talking utter bollox on the internet with so little real fear and hardship.

But I bet you've never jumped into a plane on false legs, taken to the skies and blown merry hell out of two dozen Meschershmitts before returning home in time for tea on the lawn with the squadron leader!

Go figure!

I doubt you will find many amazingly brave and heroic people who are really nice, it what makes them special. I'm a nice friendly chap who gets along with most people, but put me in a scary war situation and I'd probably sh*t my pants and run away, as would the people are slagging him off no doubt!
You are making the mistake of judging him from your own perspectives!
