John O'Groats to Lands End -- fastest time by car or motorbike?
Back in the early 80s two Norton factory testers rode Norton rotaries from JO'G to Land's End in 12 hours 45 mins total time (including fuel & food stops).
I think they took the motorway route that's 870-odd miles.
Does anyone know of any more recent, accurate times for the trip?
Just curious

Autocar tried to do this in the last year or two in a Lotus (I thinK). Not sure what the rules were (it might have been no motorways), but they didn't make it inside a day.

I doubt you'd do it quicker in car, it took me 7 hours to do Oban to Derbyshire a few weeks back and my best Derbyshire to Plymouth is 3 1/2 hours.
North of Glasgow the going is pretty slow in a car if you get caught behind any slow moving traffic.

On "The Car's the Star" a while back, Quentin Wilson talked about driving an Interceptor in the early 80s from London to Alicante to a mate that was buying it. He said he was cruising at over the ton most of the way and had to stop for fuel every 180 miles
Under 10mpg is no good even with a 20-gallon tank

I've done Northampton to Munich in, actually I can't remember I was SO tired by the end of it I was just glad to get there LOL
I know the average speed coming back was pretty high after we cleared the jams, cause we just got to the ferry before they started boarding.
But I do know that Bandit and the Snowman got from Atlanta to Texarcana and back in under 28 hours!!

A contact on the Suzi Owners Club posted that he did it in 1994 in 13 hours 30 mins total, including stops etc on a gsxr1100.
The route was all motorway from south of Perth to wherever the motorway runs out to the A30 in the south west.
Impressive!

I done JoG to LE on a Honda 90 16th to 17th December '09 in 20 hours 58 minutes. I may try to beat this time later this year, and hopefully raise a few bob for a good cause..

The issue comes in fuel consumption. If you could put a couple of large bag tanks where the rear seats used to be then I think you could do it very quickly, assuming there was no speed limit to stick too.
I have done about 200 miles in well under 3 hours before now so given that rule of thumb I think given "no limits" it could be done in well under 10 hours.
I did LEJOG in 3 days, total driving time was about 20 hours.
Was a B/H weekend too.

I once did Leeds to Newquay in 4 hours. 399 miles on the trip, although Google says 366, but 20 years ago the roads will have been a little different.

I remember going from Burton (ish) to Crianlarich for New Year and almost weeping when I got to the end of the M6 and realised I was only half way there.... I left home at 5:30pm
That was a long, long day.

Given the new record time set by the new 2011 Sti of 7minutes 55 seconds at the "Ring" then if we accept the 870 mile distance ( or 1392 Kms)
Then TM should complete the distance in a theoretical time of 8 hours 49 minutes (excluding fuel stops )
