I quite liked this place

We also like going to Le Touquet (about 1 hour south of Calais), never stayed so can't suggest any places to stay. Shopping is *ok*, no idea about the night life, but google could help

Agree with Kiwi, Reims is pretty good. Nice relaxed main street with loads of bars, cafes and restaurants. You can also do the Champagne route down to Epernay, which is a very pleasant drive and you can buy lots of cheap (but good) Champagne.
If you don't want to go as far, try Chateau de Montreuil near to Le Touquet.

Montreuil- sur - mer inland from Le touquet - take the coast road from Calais, nice twisty road once away from Calais and it will lead you past all the nice little seaside villages with good beaches down that way.Just before you get to le touquet you turn east for about 10 miles and drive up into M-s-M which is a fortified hilltop town . You can walk around the walls still - in about half an hour

We've stayed at the Chateau (as mentioned above) and the Hermitage several times (last time 1 month ago) and whilst the Chateau is nice you definitely pay for it plus it's a kind of dress for dinner/ cuisine nouvelle type arrangement, whereas the Hermitage is a perfectly presentable 50%+++ cheaper alternative with big high ceilinged rooms, etc. It was a napoleonic hospital which was converted a few years back with EU scam money. Secure gated parking around the back. It does a good buffet breakfast and has a swanky restaurant attached, if you fancy living it up, although the town is full of street cafes and bars so we just wander around normally until we find something. There 's a great creperie hidden away under the town walls which only really opens in the summer. The town is small enough to cover everything on foot in a couple of hours and then is a great base to do the North Calais coast (great beaches and little bars/ villages), and le Touquet (nightlife, shopping, beach, etc but a big anonymous place) from.
