Default Strawberries and picnics?

I have been told that when having strawberries (and cream), it is always best to cut the berries into halves or quarters, as this intensifies the favour (and aroma).

However, if you do cut them up, how long will they last before going off, compared with whole ones??

It is just that we are having an after-works picnic tomorrow (thunderstorms permitting) and i need to decide whether to cut them up beforehand, or at the time of serving.

Anyone know what is best?

Soz I can't help you on how long they would last, but I've always served them in half for him indoors and quarters for me as I have a smaller mouth, sprinkle them with sugar and load up the cream

mmmmmmmmmm, I'm going to have strawberrys for lunch tomorrow

I prefer strawberries soaked in champagne !!!!! mmmmmmm

i'm sure they should be ok if you cut them up beforehand.
not sure if it makes the flavour more intense tho

If it's any help I cut them up and sprinkle a little icing sugar on them and put them in the fridge for a while. Mmmmmmmm lovely and sweet. Had some like that today with cream.

Not sure how well they would last if they're not in a fridge all day though. You could put them in a cool box

they go a bit soft if you do that........i think its best to cut them at the last second, only takes a moment and they are nice and crisp, add sugar to taste

Well thankyou to the "fairer sex" who replied - much appreciated.

Interesting about the Icing Sugar - i normally think that larger grains are better, but i may experiment. There will be a coolbox, but even so it might deteriorate. I was in a greasy spoon up Doncaster was earlier this month, and the "pepper pot" suggested that it could be used on strawberries as well. Maybe a further experiment is required.

As for champagne - sounds good (although that will also need chilling).

I may well go for "the last second", as SS suggests (but keep a few aside for an hour or so to compare )

Cutting - seems like both halfs and quarters are in order

Lets just hope that the storms don't hit

Cheers,

mb
