I've driven past plenty of police cars whilst listening to mine. I've sat next to them at traffic lights etc too with no problems - not even a second glance. AFAIK there aren't any regulations on how loud you can listen to your stereo (apart from the usual public disturbance laws) so there is no rule in place to ensure that you are able to hear other car horns. With that in mind, they can't really enforce or justify a ban on earphones.

And where would you draw the line? A single earphone is OK? If not - there are going to be a lot of angry people who can't use their mobile phone headsets anymore... So if one earphone is OK, what about if you're deaf in the other ear?

Been listening to mine every now and then since the stereo packed up and thought it cant be illegal but I bet if you were stopped by a copper in a bad mood they'll do you for anything they can get away with... Saying that though aslong as its on fairly low you shouldnt have a problem aslong as you can hear traffic around you etc. especially emergency services.

With phone headseats, single ear is legal, two ear isn't, so I imagine the same applies to MP3s. If you're deaf in one ear, it's unwise to use even a single ear headset IMHO.

I would tend to add my exceptionally humble opinion in support of kiwiGTI's too!

I know there are plenty of cyclists in graves or hospital because of wearing earphones, when driving you should pay 100% to driving.

Not just about hearing things, when you wear earphones it tends to put you in your own little world and you losefocus on what goes on around you.
