I've seen this before though and printed it out. You can cut out either and place over the other and it only uses the same area even though one block is missing! I even turned it into a flash file to demonstrate the fact! I don't get it!!!

It doesn't use the same area - the 'hypotenuse' (the longest line of the triangle) is actually two lines. In one version, it's an 'inny' and the other version it's an 'outy' bent line. If you lay them over the top of each other, the two long edges form a quadrilateral whose area is one square.

The green triangle is 4x2 around the 90 degree angle
If you were to align the right edge of that one with the right edge of the red one and match the top corners, the green one wouldn't match the red one because the angle is different.
If the angle was the same (which it should be) it would overlay and match.

inny = concave curve

outy = convex curve

tw0 long edges form a quadrilateral.....??????....?????? sounds like bull to me :P
