ooooh must bid must bid mist bid, YEAH!! I got it
...Now how much did I pay?
I think getting caught up in the bidding excitement overcomes some of them but others just think Ebay is the cheapest and dont bother to look.

I'm pretty convinced that few, if any, look at the P&P figure before bidding.
Then are shocked when places do the same item for a bit more NEW, but P&P free, so it works out cheaper for new
I've just been outbid on a Thule bike carrier for the car roof bars, one of their "wheel-out" kind, and the person who beat me will pay AT LEAST the same as a new item

you have wasted time, bidding on the item, finding the real cost of the new item, making a thread on a BBs about it.
they have bought the item they wanted and outbid some northern monkey in the process.
depends which way you view the situation

My gf got beaten in an auction for a second hand Laurastar ironing system. The last few bids where hundreds of dollars more than the cost of a new one, including shipping. There were dozens of bids in the last 30 seconds, so they knew enough to use a bid sniper, but where too thick/lazy to investigate the cost new. Twannies.
As the old saying goes, "A fool and his money are soon parted".

A lot of it must be due to the way Ebay is worded. You dont buy things, you "win" them. If you dont bid enough you are told you have been outbid and should "increase your bid to win the item" etc etc.
Its all too easy for people to get over-excited by it all and they dont want to loose, no matter what the cost.
Ebay lost its appeal for me a long time ago when selling became such a chore, trying to avoid numpties and scammers, paying extortionate fees and buying often turns into a lottery as people seem to talk up their item a lot and often charge silly postage costs.
I still buy the odd thing from ebay, but only after doing a lot of searching around normal retailers and online stores first.
