Question Serious overheating

Time to consult the all knowing oracle

It's over 30 degrees in my garden, the earth is scorched, the cats are hiding in the house - it's hot, damn hot, I am becomming increasingly concerned about the kiddies rabbit and guinea pigs, they're in a run, in the shade but suffering, how do I cool em down or will they be ok ?

I have been having the same concerns as you.

My rabbit has the run of the garden but last couple of days he has stayed in his hutch even though the door is open.

Surely they get used to the heat? providing they have plenty of water freely available?

Is garage any cooler?

Small desk fan?

There's always the deep freeze

Added - you could ring the vets and see if they have any tips.

Rabbits will be OK as long as they have shade and water. Guinea pigs can have a dip in water if you fancy it. Good chance to give them a bath as they tend to smell a bit this time of year.

Cheers

Make sure they have plenty of (I suppose ideally cool) water to drink.

Also rabbits like to be sprayed with those "misting" sprayers you use to spray plants with. Spraying them every so often should help make them more comfortable.

stop being a big girl, how do they survive in the outdoors??
(rabbits that is, guinea pigs are only pets arent they)

fill up the paddling pool, and chuck them all in, get some toys for them and join them

(or do some work you lucky barsteward and stop sunbathing )

Cats body temperature is a few degrees hotter, thus they are cooler, but they still get hot with their summer fur coat on. I don't know about rabbits or guinea pigs.

Old sheets or something like that over the hutch should make it nice and shady. We do that with ours, although one of them is a sun worshipper, who will find the tiniest corner of sunlight to sit in! Mind you, a couple of years ago she got herself overheated (guage on red, steam coming out of ears ) and had to be hosed down in the shower!

We did try putting frozen water bottles in the run, but the bunnies just looked at them and ignored them - so much for that idea.

We got a desk fan out for our rabbit when we had her, she loved it sat right in front of it (especially as she was fond of the odd bit of sunbathing, so the cool of the fan in the sun was ideal for her).

Just another suggestion, may sound a bit stupid, but if the rabbit/guinea pigs are fair furred, then some suncream on the ears might be a good idea.

Well they lived !!!!!!
In the end we put a huge pyrex thing in the run with water in it.
One guinea sat in it, the rabbit hid from it and just munched grated carrot (he has no front teeth) and the other guinea just played dead.
For the record, all 3 of my cats and the white/ginger guinea always have SPF50 on their ears in the summer

So the sun cream has now been tested on animals

Is that the new bunny boiler in your own back garden then

My cat tends to just bask in the sun whenever she gets the chance, and as soon as I pull up in the car, she will jump on it to stay warm too, even in this weather !!

My dog seems to just sit there and pant all day and doesnt bother too much with his water, and preferes being in the house in the cool, than outside even in his kennel
