Try The Boathouse in the middle of Central Park. As it's a bit dodgy there of a night time, a bus picks you up and takes you to and from the restaurant!
The restaurant itself is wonderful, and set at the side of a lake where they have gondolas. My wife and I were over there for 5 nights in August 2001 to celebrate our engagement and ate there and Windows On The World.

ok...seeing as you didnt answer my request for what sort of food etc, ill just give you a couple of my favourites...
Cafe orlin- on st marks btwn 1st/2nd ave... my favourite steak in the world. Not the biggest or the best, just something about it and the sauce they make.
Suba (www.subanyc.com). Very pricey, very classy and very nice. Flamenco show while you eat at 8pm on sundays..... advance reservations always required as it is popular.
Sala One Nine - 19th between 5th/6th ave.... spanish restaurant, bar and tapas place. try the steak or the seabass. Again, very classy and nice. Romantic place to take someone. One of the waitresses is sooooooooo fit too.
City crab (park/19th ish) does good seafood- fresh lobster.
El b$stardio (have put the $ there to stop it censoring it- it should be an 'a' ) on 23rd/7th is a nice spanish place.
For brunch/breakfast try cafe reggio on macdougal.
Burger heaven on lexington/62nd ( 1 block from bloomingdales) does good burgers- ask for bobby and tell him the english Dj sent you....he will know who you mean.
As i said before, there is so many to choose from.NYC Restaurants, NYC menus, ratings, reviews, New York City Restaurants Guide lists most of them- you should venture out into brooklyn too- there are some fine restaurants there too.
Times square isnt really the sort of area to go to for food- unless you like overpriced tourist crap.
PM me nearer then time- I should be living there by then all being well and can give you up to date info.

depends on your budget, but we went on a boat that cruised up and down the river all evening - great food and atmosphere, seeing the statue, the bridges and manhattan at night.
Not cheap though, but it was our 1st wedding anniversary.
Shout if you are interested, and I'll look out the details

I'd say it's harder to find a bad restaurant than a good one in New York .
Go for a walk and pick one you like the look of .

Went to an amazing Argentinian restaurant last week.
Its over in Williamsburg, but the food was awesome.
Sweetwater- on North 6th between berry & Wythe sts. Cab from manhattan about $12/14ish
re: local dishes- you need to go to Brooklyn for that and go to Juniors cheesecake or Grimaldis Pizza
Juniors-386 Flatbush ave extension (fulton market entrance)
Grimaldis is the original pizza place. You get lines out of the door all day here its so popular. Has a real coal brick oven too- it is very very nice pizza!
Easy to get to- get the F train to york st or the A/C trains to High St. Its on old Fulton st- right by the river cafe (another tourist hot spot) under the Brooklyn bridge on the waterfront.
Quite possibly the best pizza in the world.

Aureole - if you want to push the boat out.
Gotham Bar and Grill - perennial favourite in Greenwich Village, famous for its food 'towers'.
Gramercy Tavern
- Regularly voted the most popular restaurant in NYC.
Union Square Cafe
- A classic, everyone should visit this place.
Peter Luger Steakhouse - over the Bridge in Brooklyn, the best steaks in NY, looks like a traditional pub saloon bar inside.
burger joint in the lobby of Le Parker Meridien, an incongruous place to buy a fantastic all-american hamburger
Agree with Reality, NY is full of great places to eat, those above are ones I've been to myself and can recommend
