Question Home Cinema - Wireless Speakers ?

I have just heard about this - is this fairly recent technology ?

It would be ideal as I want to put some surround sound speakers up in the lounge but don't want wires everywhere...

Looking for Sony as everything else is (TV, Amp, Sub etc)

Thanks for any help

I have thought about this and basically came to the conclusion that they must be average at best.

Sound quality depends on many factors, including the quality of the speakers, but probably the main one is the quality of the amplifier driving them. They must have tinny little things built in which provide the directional aspect but generally sound bad.

They're called 'satellite' speakers I believe and I liked the idea of having no wires in the lounge. Not all manufacturers do them though.

Its been a round for a while, i have a phillips system that has wireless speakers, it works well and i am very pleased with mine, they cost around £350 i think for the system, not bad in my eyes..

i looked at this recently but it seems the rear speakers had to be plugged in and still wired to each other? so not as "wirless" as i thought....and it was only the rears.

The Sony system uses an infra-red sender to get the signal from the system to the rears. It does this digitally so there should be no loss of quality. The rear speakers have built in amplifiers (and all the other gubbins DACs etc.). Still need to plug the rear speakers into the mains though.

Sounds good to me. As long as the system sounds good i'm not too fussed if it wouldnt keep George Lucas happy. Not many can tell the sound difference between a £250 surrround sound and a £1000 system!
