.............eat the cherries? If not, why not?

Our town is full of 'em in parks and beside the roads, and the cherries just fall off and are trodden in, or the birds get them.

Don't see why not. Usual cautions about being by a main road (pollution) and different types of cherries (I heard of when a guy scrumped an orange near a Spanish police officer who did nothing - but smiled when the thief bit it and found it was a Seville!) apply.

You'll probably get done for stealing public property though.
