I think what is even worse about this is that the general public, who used to support the police, are now the first to point the finger at them. Let's be honest, there are very few people who don't occasionally nip out to the shop etc. when they are supposed to be working and some firms are even allowing workers to watch World Cup matches.
Now that the police have lost the support and good will of the public and now that the only time we see them is when they are pointing a laser gun at us, telling us on the phone that they aren't really interested in the crime that has just been committed against us or sleeping when they should be working it is to be expected that people will grass them up.
In a recent discussion on policing on this board a police officer who tried to defend his position couldn't understand why we wanted police on the streets and crime prevention. He was convinced that these were nothing to do with policing which was about things like "continuity of evidence." He is probably viewed as an ideal employee within the force and it is this lack of understanding of what the public want that is causing the public to be happy to attack the police in this manner.
What I will say is that it is important that we let our opinions be known but that we also throw out weight behind the police. We need to pressure the powers that be into seeing our persepctive but we also need to give them the confidence and support to make the changes necessary to meet our demands. Then it will be common to see police officers in local cafes, or betting shops but they will be there on the beat carrying out the duties that the public want to see them carry out.
