Default iPod takes AGES to connect

Used to be fine, 5/10 secs before iTunes or Windows sees it. Now it takes 1/2/5 minutes! explorer or itunes all 'not responding' but comes back after a while.

Plugged in same port, no other ports changed etc. AV and spyware all up-to-date.

Any ideas?

Sometimes the ipod doesnt get recognised on my pc at all. I have to try loading up itunes then connecting the ipod, rather than letting itunes load up automatically when you connect the ipod.

Are you using the firewire cable or just the usb?

Have you updated the ipods software?

You could try running disk defragmention on the iPod, see if that makes any difference.

Ah, I'd have assumed it would have seen it as a disk. If you manage to get the little blighter mounted, go into the iPod Options in iTunes and enable the "Disk mode" option, then try going into the defragmention app and see if it then lists it.

Right, UPDATE - and it's BAD.

I decided to use the iPod updator to restore the ipod to factory settings and re-install after etc.

It starts off ok then after a short while returns "Firmware update failure. Disk write error". and no helpful information about what to do about it. The player has been working ok so if there was a hdd fail then surely it would have not been working earlier.

Looks like it's my USB 2 card. I plugged it in to my usb 1 port and it restored ok.

Drac,
Bad news about the USB2 card, bloody things! At least you've worked out what the cause was.

Card has been working for almost a year all OK. no idea why it doesn't anymore. The only thing is that the printer was plugged in and now isn't although the cable itself was still plugged into the usb port. I've disconnected that but will have to wait a few hours to test it as the iPod is re-loading all the songs (all 8500 of them! )

oohh, darn another error cropped up about not being able to write to the disk. prob still the usb port I hope.
