Car Insurance Cancellation- runaround?
Sister just sold her car and has called to cancel the insurance. The insurance guy has said they will cancel once they receive the certificate back and with a copy of the sale agreement.
Now, having the certificate back is normal though why it can't be cancelled right now is a bit dubious. The really strange thing is this request for a copy of the sale agreement. What bloody business is it of theirs if the car has been sold or not? If you want to cancel insurance on a car surely it's up to if you sell it anyway. They'll no longer be liable. It just sounds like a time wasting measure so they have to provide the smallest refund on the policy.
The insurance guy also said that there would be a cancellation fee (fair enough) but he couldn't say how much it was going to be. He said it would be worked out once they got the certificate back.
Smells like bull to me unless I'm missing something?
Sorry to admin..misposted this elsewhere and don't know how to pull a thread!

My renewal came up whilst I was waiting for my new car to be delivered. There was about 2 weeks difference, so I renewed the policy on the understanding that I could cancel at any time.
I cancelled my insurance a week or so ago - the car is up for sale, but is parked up in the garage atm. They were happy to cancel it but I had to pay a £19 cancellation fee, plus there will be an amount deducted from the refunded money, for pro-rata coverage for those 2 weeks.
They never asked for proof that the car has been sold (i told them it had been ) but have confirmed that they will not send out any confirmation of no claims etc until the monies had been deducted/refunded and until they were in receipt of my returned certificate of insurance.*
They should be able to advise their standard admin charges etc to your sister - something sounds a little strange.
* which reminds me to phone Admiral tomorrow to find out where my no claims confirmation is!!

What he/she said.
They have no say in anything other than insurance - end of story.
Is it some tin pot company via a local broker?? Doesn't sound like your usual major company/call centre type thing.

They probably can't give a figure as they will only cancel the insurance once they get the cover note back, it may take some people a week to post it so they may just be covering their backs by not giving a figure. Maybe.
