Default House location...10 worse things??

We all know in general, whats the good things to look for when buying a house,in relation to its location.
Not overlooked
Quite street/road
No building work close
Etc etc etc etc...The list goes on..

But whats the worse things???

Reason i ask is,a friend has just bought a house to sell on,he is pretty new to the game and seems to have paid the going rate for the house. It isnt overlooked,is semi rural and a private road, thats a dead end services the 8 cottages...All sounds bliss..But within 150ft of the front of the house is the main Manchester to Huddersfield train line....and its fairly busy, with a main refuse train cominng through at 4am!!
I thought he was mad to buy the house..He is adamant the trainline dont matter at all..
Am i bein picky here???

As a kid used to live on the A5 in Wales before it was bypassed. Was a very busy road especially in the summer with caravans and such, I could sleep with the windows open no problem. You get used to it.

yeah wouldnt buy a house near a railway line. The house i am looking to buy has its own private tree lined road of 250metres. And is semi rural. Horses for courses i suppose.

Neighbours can make or break a house really. Oh, and always go back at several times of day to get a real feel for the road and what goes on there.

If bedrooms face outwards toward the road, avaoid hills and speed humps. Vans thrash up the hill and crash over the bumps, annoying at 6am in the morning

Hello

I used to live near a train line and it was annoying for the first few nights and then it was fine. Any guests however were not so impressed by the noise at 5am.

No worries and thanks for the replies...............

But overall, would you buy a house that is 1/4 million quid, with no garage and the train a little bit too close..??
Bearing in mind, that terrace are 90k+ and semi's are 160k plus in our local post cotton mill little town!!

There is quite a bit of choice in this area for that kinda money,i just thought perspective buyers would be put off before they even looked at the house and move on to the next house...

Perhaps im being too critical, but it would have to be mighty cheap for me to have a house in that position!!!!

It really does depend. There is no such thing as the perfect house that everyone will love, and clearly there are plenty of people in the world that happily buy and live in houses next to railway lines. The problem I'd see is this - personally I don't like the idea of a railway line so, like many buyers, I'd check the location out on Google Maps/ Multimap before deciding even to request the details for the property. As soon as I spotted the railway line on the map it would be a no.

We're moving house in a month or so and I know we rejected several houses near railway lines. It didn't matter how gorgeous the photo's looked, or how rural the location, we just didn't even want the full details sent through. To be fair, during a desperate phase we did go and look at one - and the house was lovely - but the railway put us right off.

My point is that if people don't like the idea of being near a railway, then they most likely won't request the details and, almost certainly, won't bother going around for the viewing - regardless of how gorgeous, immacualte and rural it may be.

All depends on the speed / frequency of the trains, tree cover, embankment etc for the noise.

Could be a bonus if within walking distance of the station!

Its amazing how many people are into this game!! Buy houses, and sell them on to other people for ever-increasing amounts of borrowed money!

I dont think there is one 'worst' thing about a house - just as you say various things such as;

garden being overlooked
backing onto industrial area/council estates etc
near a pylon
in an area prone to floods
etc etc
