Where are you staying? It's a fantastic island and the locals are great....but the divide between what us foreigners have in our pockets and what the locals earn is frightening.
I spent time in Raas Nungwi (learned to dive, but resort sand beach not that good) and in Old Town (main town). Old Town is a fantastic cultural trip - loads of religion (churches, mosques and temples) all co-existing without issue (but the morning chorus of bells, chanting and ting-ting's takes a bit of getting used to! ). Some great hotels, and some even better antique stores - most places have an 'upstairs' for private entry only. You shouldn't go there if easily offended - some of the things you can buy should never ever leave the country IMO.
Overall I loved it and would go back - maybe not for the resorts, more for the people and culture. Oh, police are corrupt - don't accept hand-rolled 'ciggies' in the beach bars....common scam; police bust you, scare you and 'fine' you. Having bought the owner a few drinks beforehand helps
Have fun - most of the resorts have great bedrooms

We went to Breezes on the opposite coast.Roads were halg great half terrible track! Fantastic resort. Echo the comments above. Very chilled friendly people. Stone town is well worth a visit. The slave market/pen/cell is very humbling. Also did a spice tour, not official tour just through one of the resorts' taxi drivers. Educational and chilled. The local ginger beer is great! Add dark rum for a "dark n stormy" (though I think it is Bermudian). Good choice , enjoy.
