You are very correct. The car only cost 1700 quid.Third party F/T insurance comes out to be £1800 to 2600
This is a rip off!
The lad has been riding a bike prior to that for a good while. No claims, nothing!
But they just don't wanna bujj!

I will try that confused.com because,i am sick to death on being on phone for an hour each company and,I am highly confused

1) If he lives at home then you could insure vehicle and put him down as named driver. Need to be a bit careful if he uses it too regularly though.

2) When he passed he will have been given some boring magazine but it is full of ads offering good deals for young drivers. Very limited use though.

3) Ask or search in Insurance forum although this will get prolly get moved anyway..

4) Expensive because statistics are not in lad's favour when it comes to bashing something.

Humm.
He is a named registered owner and a keeper of the car.Therefore.they won't insure me on it first and,put him on later.
All the companies have been rung from that boring mag.All rip off barstards!
I have been told that if he does Pass Plus, his insurance may come down by 15-20%.
May look into that.

all young blokes insurance quotes are huge, i work for peugeot and try to get quotes for everyone, normally start with elephant to get an idea as they are normally quite good, tescos seem to be there or thereabouts too.

i have had quotes for 3 grand upwards on a new 107, 1litre engine, group1 insurance etc, i know the car is 7 grand, but when you ask for quotes on cheap cars and they come back with huge sums, often more than the car is worth, the insurance companies then say it is the damage you may cause going into a merc etc.

nothing you can do really, i think the phrase is over a barrel!!

When my eldest passed his test at 18, we insured his car in my name with CIS, no problem. Nor were they interested in who drove mostly, and I could have put any number of young drivers on for the price: about £800, TPFT.

The next year he went with Tesco, a year older, fully comp on a 1.4 Ibiza 52 plater was £1200.

This year, it's down to £800.

Have you thought about doing it in your name, while allowing him to earn NCB, as per the new policies from Direct Line?

I had a 1.2, W reg clio for my first car and the insurance on that fully comp in my name was only £1200 with Tesco's which was good at the time because all my friends were paying £1500+ for the insurance on there cars.

Getting your first car insured when your a young is always going to be expensive!..

As I said,he is the registered keeper and the owner of the vehicle. That is why,I can't get insured on it first and then, isure him(according to most companies). CSI sound promising.I will get their quote too

Yes Carla,it will be expensive for young driver.

Try getting a quote in his name with you as a named driver, because that sometimes drops it a bit. I'm 26 and putting my dad on my policy with Elephant dropped my insurance by £30

By the way the pass plus helps a lot I thought, dropped my insurance quote by a few hundred.

You are best off changing the registered owner to you and putting him as a named driver, then after two years start building up his own policy. Thats what I have done- I am 22 and have just got my quote for £340 for a Fiat Brava 1.4 with 2 years no claims. I am also named on my brothers ITR for £190- so it pays to wait.

Try elephant, and all the best.

Pass plus only knocks a percentage off your insurance, when you think about how many lessons doing the pass plus etc and then the cost for doing so you need to work out the sums and see if the money you save on your insurance is really worth it.

When I passed a good few years back my insurance on a Smart pure (599cc engine) was £1200 only paid £4.5k for the car! I was told pass plus would reduce my quote - Pass plus would have cost me £100 and the drop in insurance was £30

im a young driver (19) i had a fiat seicento 900cc cost me £837 a year third party fire and theft, wrote that off and got a hyundia amica 1litre thats a extra £35. It is always expensive to get insured when you get your first car if i didnt put my step dad on my car insurance as a named driver it would of been £1200 so your best being a named driver on your sons policy

...unfortunately that's exactly why quotes for young drivers are so high.

You've no doubt tried most companies now and discovered that there's only so much you can knock off by shopping around. The only way to make any further dent in the premium is to get a really slow, cheap car and insure it TPFT.

FWIW, my first car was mum's old Fiat Panda - 13 yrs old, 45bhp, grp 1 insurance and still expensive, though nowhere near as bad as some of the figures quoted above.

Yes,i think that would really help if I become the registered owner and the keeper. Then I can actually insure it and,put him on Insurance.Surely it will be cheaper this way.Good idea, folks

You don't need to be the registered owner, you just need to go on his insurance. My first car I had my mum as a named driver and it worked out about £300 cheaper

The only way around it is to re register the car in your name and let your son use your NCB as an additional driver!

As said direct line are good for that and will honour a bonus at the end of the year to the additional driver!

Remember and protect your NCB though
