DABS were doing a special deal on a starter kit for wireless Lan ! the same kit you are looking at to (Netgear access point and PCMCIA card), think it was 233.82 (inc VAT) their site isnt working at the mo but the quicklink is XXWWS (yeah i ordered one for the same reason you are ) Claim a 50m range indoors and 200m range outdoors ???

Hello!

I use the wireless router from SMC and it's great!

The router is connected to the internet via an ISDN modem.

You can get the router to emulate any MAC address that you wish, so you can actually use it to connect to the internet rather than your W2K computer. It can also be used as a DHCP server for all of your PC's.

If you want anymore details, please feel free to mail me.

Steve.

** Edited to add some more information, once I actually read the post properly! **

Question

Chaps,

I want to setup a cheap and cheerful Radio LAN in my house. Basically I'm gonna install Win2K on my machine upstairs in the spare bedroom, get two net cards and use NAT on Win2K to allow me to connect my internal LAN to the net via my Cable Modem (which will only allow the MAC address of the net card in my PC (hence NAT)).

I then want to connect a radio transmitter to this LAN and use a PCMCIA/PCCard in my laptop downstairs so I can surf from anywhere in the house.

Trouble is, I don't know which products are any good? I'm looking at something like a Netgear ME102 802.11b Wireless Access point (£159) and a Netgear Wireless PC Card (£80) or perhaps two 3COM Wireless PC Cards plus an ISA/PCI 3COM PC Card docking card thing....

I want to keep it as cheap as poss but want a solution that's going to be reliable up to a range of about 20 metres through brickwalls and such like.

Anybody (please )....???

After speaking tonight to Telewest ('cos my Cable Modem connection is buggered again ), I discovered that you can register up to 5 MAC addresses with them and not the two I was led to believe.

That means that I can go for a more basic router with just Wireless added on. That will hopefully bring down the cost but we'll have to see.

Thanks for your help guys, I'll let you know what I decide.

Ta,

Matt

Matt,

I would be interested.

I already have a couple of machines connected to the hub on the back of my Cisco ISDN router. I hope to use my laptop also connected to this router via wireless.

I'm hoping I can just stick a PC Card into the laptop and an access point into the hub.

This way, I may be able to sit in the pub beer garden down the road and do work (My DECT phone works that far, just).

Cheers

Ian
