Default Financial dilemma what should i do??

In A bit of a financial crisis at the mo,

as you know i,m back at work after a spell of gardening practice

been told i will be made a formal offer this week, and therein lies the problem

at the mo i get a basic hourly rate, and i have been told by my boss they will match this for the offer... so far so good.

now if they put me in at a 'y' band my sallary is fixed, there is a lower point, a mid point and an upper point low is 24K mid is 30k upper is 38k however there is no provision for overtime,as the sallary reflects the position, however the role i do frequents many hours of o/t due to the way projects run and delivery dates.
however if they put me in at 'x' band the situation changes the lower is 20k the mid 24k and the upper 28k, but overtime is paid. now there is the chance that there would be no o/t which means i wouldnt be better off, but if there was i could do very well.

'y' band is mid tech related, 'x' band is classed as management

what do you reckon i should go for??

It's purely an overtime issue then isn't it?

There is a 4, 6 and 10k difference between the 3 levels in the 2 bands then?

Can you see yourself making up the shortfall from overtime?

You say although you do lots of overtime now, it might dry up.

It's a gamble only you can take.

I would NEVER sell more of my time than is absolutely required .... I don't get paid for overtime so I don't work it!!

I would take the salary that is paid as the job reflects it .... why take a job where you can earn more by selling hours of your life???????

Granted, £38k a year is crap .... but it's just about ok if you are still looking for a better paid position.

Maybe I'm naive, but I'd have thought that management would pay higher than mid-tech? And doesn't management look better on a CV later?

Only an idiot would suggest that £38k is a crap wage.

Oh, sorry, it was PS Lewis, say no more!

i personally would go for the highest "basic" salary.

do you want to spend your entire life working overtime??
what happens when the overtime dries up??

if you need the cash, do something else on the side and enjoy
the extra time you have not working at your full time job!!

just a thought, but good luck whatever route you take

He doesn't mention it being per annum, the way I see it is it needs to be per week, surely?

Reading this thread from the top and thought to myself PSL will be along in a few posts time to say how he wouldn't even consider getting out of bed for 38k.....

And there it was at post #5 So predictable

Pete "I'm seriously richer than youuus" Lewis strikes again

Yeah but if he is indeed as old as he says he is, all those annual increases, no wonder he is earning so much.

Still a mystery to me who or what PSL is.

And theres me thinking I was doing all right as I will coincidentally earn about 38k this year !

So come on Pete, what do you do and how much does it pay, all the borderline Octagenerians I know have either retired twenty years ago or have worked as a school caretaker or in B and Q ?

Mart, my grade is similar, classed as management so no OT, I will do a few extra hours if required but I make sure I get them back, just get your feet under the table then can call the shots a bit more, I have worked with contractors that get paid several hundred pounds a day yet wont do a minute over so for 30 grand I wouldnt do more than you want to do.

I'd go for the highest basic salary, but find out how much "unpaid" overtime you are expected to do. Secondly if you are unhappy with the package is there provision to change it say after 6 months?

agreed
i fell into the trap of relying on overtime a few years back, there was as much as i could do, all was happy in my world, then it dried up and it came as quite a shock.

Prehaps i should clarify on the hours...

normally 37pw, but as i,m project based, it ramps extensivly at project completion phase to around 55pw, and on average it is in 12-20wk bursts.. there is no other way of doing the role, to make the hours less over the given week due to the nature of the work...

so in effect i can make a good return for a slight hours loss, or be stuck doing the same hours on less money..

You are young, earn it while you can. Go for the overtime, then relax later in life.
