Why does scratching a bite make it worse?
I've a mozzie bite on my elbow which is proving to be a pain.
Why does scratching an insect bite make the area worse?
Incidentially, does anyone have any recommdations for lowering the inflamation & itchyness?
The red area is about 6" across with a white 2" round bit where the bite is. It's itchy as **** and has been getting slowly worse for the last 10 days. . .

Anthysan cream with an anti-histimine tablet of some description.
You don't really need me to explain why further aggrevating a damaged part of your body is a bad idea do you?
ETA - if it's that big and been going on for that long - get to the fookin' docs now!

It sounds exactly like the bite I got from a Horsefly, nasty little buggers. I just left mine to heal on it's own and didn't scratch it at all. It lasted ages but went away eventually.
I react badly to bites so take antihistamines orally and spray the affected area with Biteze to relieve the itching but, most importantly resist the urge to scratch them no matter how itchy they get.

Heat up a kitchen knife til red hot then place it two inches away from the bite.
Should take you mind off the bite long enough for the bite to heal.

coz if you scratch them it could spread even more but not only that you can scar yourself i know from experiance i have 4 small scars on my right wrist from bites coz i scratched them.
theres a little stick you can get from supermarkets called after bite it looks like a pen its fantastic put it on the bite it stings for about 10 seconds and then it will stop it being inflamed and itching

make sure theres no redness going thru the veins. If there is get to the doctors pretty quickly.
I had a bite on my wrist, it swelled like mad, i also had 2 red lines running up my arms, so my dad took me to the hospital and had to be on a drip for around 2 days.

Glad it's going down, it can be a real pain. I hate mosquitos, I seem to be allergic I was bitten on my left hand on a knuckle a few days prior to leaving NZ, entire hand puffed up, ended up at the doctors. All the nurses and doctors sucked air in through their teeth when they saw it, I was even written off of work for three days despite being on holiday! Repellent doesn't seem to make any difference on me, they love me.

If it's a mozzy bite, then cream doesn't help, you need to keep it dry. Try using alcohol on it to dry it out more quickly. That's what I read on the Internet so it must be right
