Advice on what to get for a runabout!

I've got about £1k to spend on a runabout, needs to be reliable and fairly low key. Also want something small.
Been thinking about getting a sensible sub 1.4 (cheap tax) Fiesta, 205 or Clio but then started getting a bit carried away!
Can you get a good 1.9 GTi for £1k? or am I looking at sheds? (just looking on Autotrader at this stage) How reliable are they?
I'm undecided whether the additional running costs will outweigh the grin factor from a nippy hot hatch.
Anyone got any thoughts or suggestions?
