Deciding if a car is a write off?
Does anyone know what criteria insurance companies generally use to determine whether a vehicle is beyond economic repair? i.e. is it 50% of market value or some such calculation?

Typically with most cars it is usually just a comparison of cost of repair vs. market value (usually bottom book trade value).
There is also other factors where they may decide to write off a car due to it already previously having insurance accident repairs (under the same policy or company as it adds to the insurer's cost on that particular car).
Also they may repair extenesively damaged vehicles with specialist vehicles (usually commercials - built to order. Tippers, box vans etc ) or classic car insurance where the repair cost can exceed the vehicle's trade value.
The above was a factor to explain why our ****box LDV worth £1500 was not written off and had £3000 of body repairs!!
Some companies can also be open to negotiation in borderline cases where the car's value is not far from the repair cost.

A lot of major motor insurers will write a car off if the repair costs exceed 60% of the PAV (Pre Accident Value).
The PAV being decided by their engineer following an inspection to ascertain the condition of the vehicle pre-accident. Eg good, average or poor condition, Glass' Guide will give a price of each iirc.

Hmm, I'm guessing that would amount to around £3000 worth of repairs on my Forester, which is more than I reckon it'll cost.
I was hoping it would get written off as we were planning to sell it before a truck rammed up it's backside. Now we'll end up trying to sell a damaged/repaired car
