Talking Shell PlusPoints/Optimax Card

I filled up with Optimax on sunday and the attendant asked if I always used Optimax. Upon saying yes he was surprised that I hadn't been sent an Optimax card as apparentley they keep track of which fuels their customers use and send out the cards accordingly. He reckoned you get better rewards with this card and that you get Ferrari merchandise.

I e-mailed Shell on monday telling them what he sid and asked if I qualified for one. They passed on my details to Plus Points who e-mailed me back the following today:

Dear Mr Edison

Thank you for your correspondence regarding the Shell pluspoints programme.

In response to your query to receive an automatic upgrade to an Optimax account members must purchase three lots of Optimax fuel in a month. Unfortunately as this was not the case your account was not upgraded.

We can confirm that we have manually upgraded your account to an Optimax account and you should receive a new card within the next 7 to 10 working days. This card will have the same account number on it as your existing Pluspoints card therefore you can keep using your existing card until the new one arrives.

So the answer was no, but I'm still getting one!

Had mine for years too. Had some Ferrari stuff off it. Got the Big bag, the Waterproof jacket, and a Cap (Shouldn't have bothered with the cap).

Can't be @rsed saving up for one of the Ferrari days. Would take years.

I've had one for a few years too, don't buy it anymore but it seems they don't "downgrade" you

Is the Optimax card different to the normal Shell loyalty card?

Yes you get more points and more bonus points - I can't remember the exact ridiculous way they calculate it, but its better than buying normal fuel. Had mine since I bought the Impreza and usually weigh the points in at the end of year for vouchers. Its not a bad deal actually, think I got about £60 worth of Next vouchers so I used them to buy the kids some clothes for Xmas.

AhhhhhhH!!!!!

Now I realise why the checkout girl winked at me (no, not *that* sort of wink) and said that I should fill up 3 times on the same day, preferably at different stations for a fiver in optimax when she gave me the pluspoint card application form. I thought it was just to activate it, but as you've described above, it is actually to convert it to Optimax card instead of Pluspoint card... Such a shame that Optimax is over my £1 limit for petrol purchases these days

They just sent mine in the post - must've noticed that the only fuel I buy is Optimax. I had the original loyalty card at first.

Had the Optimax card for a few years now - automatically upgraded after a few months buying Optimax. I just get Shell vouchers when I've got enough points = Free petrol
Works out at the equivalent of about 1p per litre off, but I only use about two tank fulls a month. If you're using more than this, you'll get more bonus points and more money off.

Used to use Shell Optimax all the time, but it was of variable quality - as noted on my Knocklink

Now I use Tesco Ron 99 - its cheaper, is better quality and so I will only ever use Optimax in an emergency or when I venture 'North' where they sell a lot less 99 Ron

(Bob Rawle confirmed that of the cars he's mapped Tesco Ron - is much better, as expected as its supposed to be minimum 99 Ron)

I probbaly used to spend a fortune on Shell - now I use Tesco and Methonal mixtures.......

Just checked my Optimax card balance for the first time in 2 years, had 4600 points on it so now I have £30 of NEXT vouchers winging their way to me.

Well, if 95 goes over the pound/litre, then I'll just re-adjust the limit to £2

Thats interesting as having changed my Impreza for a Hyundai Sante Fe (!) I am now a diesel user. Use less diesel than Optimax but had stopped making a policy of going to Shell, Looks like I will have to restart, although need to consider what to spend by 21,000 points on. Mind you it only equates to £140.

It makes you realise how much you spend on fuel - I'm on 35000 points at the moment, and have spent £300 of Comet vouchers over the last 2 or 3 years after cashing in points
