I've read an urban legend saying it's meant to stop radar/laser guns used by police from reading your speed, which is total tosh.

I've seen it a lot over here, and there aren't any fixed speed cameras, just cops with radar/laser devices.

I've heard others say it's some relegion thing, as it seems to be mainly non christians with the CD's, though no idea why this would be the case.

They tried this theory on mythbusters turns out to be utter bollox, they also tried covering the car in tinfoil/ radar absorbing paint nothing worked.

I thought it was a muslim thing too. The CD is nearly always the same one with the same arabic writing on it.

The ones who think that CDs can somehow defeat speed cameras (because reflective surfaces are so effective at absorbing radar) tend to put them in the grille.

Just treat the second type the same as you would treat a car with england flags stuck to the top window. Warning: This driver has below average intellegence.
