Default 100 miles round trip to work?

Does anybody do 50 miles plus to work everyday?

I'm on the hunt for a new job and I was wondering if anybody does 50+ miles to and from work 5 days a week as I would appreciate your opinion on the travel?

I'll be looking at 60 miles which should take 75 mins.

I do 31 each way per day, but doesn't bother me as it's a lovely drive over the hope valley in the peak district, takes me between 40-50 mins normally.

I did Loughborough to London on a daily basis for 6 months (by train) and also did Loughborough to Cambridge by car for over 2 years - about 105 odd miles each way. Used to leave a 4am to be there for 6am and then leave about 3pm to get home for 6-7pm. Worst run I got home a 2am, that was the in freak snow about 4 years back.

Settle(North yorks)to Leeds about 90 miles round trip. Takes 1.5 hours to get there

I leave at 17:30 get to Leeds at around 19:00 work a 12 hour shift.

I Also work 2 days shifts before the 2 nights which means getting up at 05:00 get to Leeds for 07:00 do a 12 hour shift in the office drive home and get in at about 20:30 pm.

Must admit i'm ready for some "normal hours" as the traveling is becoming a drag, but at least its only for 4 days then i get 4 off.

I've just moved house, before which I'd had 6 months of doing 80 miles each way every day. About 1 hr 30 or so on most days, as there was a lot of motorway involved, but did have a few journeys from hell - particularly when Gloucestershire was snowed up and it took me over 5 hours to get home one night . . . Even in a cheap diesel runabout, it was also costing over £100/week. Scoob would have been comfortably double that.

You can do it, but when you stop doing so, you realise how much better quality of life you have when you live within 10 miles / 15 minutes away!

£100 on diesel a week for work

I'll be doing it in a 1.8 petrol Mondeo so I'm looking at 600 miles a week which will cost around £90-110 (around £5000 a year) then extra servicing.

I'll need to be looking at a mini of £6000 payrise to be worth while

The "over £100" was including servicing, depreciation etc, probably "only" £80/week on fuel. On top of that throw in £250/year insurance, about £15/month servicing, perhaps £15/week depreciation on that mileage, and any other "consumables" - in my case nearly £200 in 6 months for 4 tyres, tracking, new set of wiper blades and a couple of bulbs - comes to say £115/week.

Don't forget that the cost you're talking about is money that you've already paid tax on. £6k/year after tax is probably going to be roughly double that in gross salary if you're talking 40% tax, NI etc . . . . .

£6000 wont even cover it in that case

I'm not even talking about a 40% tax salary so I need to do some serious thinking.

Hello

I used to do 80 miles each way to work and although I would do it again if I really had to, it did effect the quality of life. The only 'upside' was that I could work at home for a week or so a month, which made it bearable.

I do 90 mins each way (by train) & usually work 8-6 - not much of a life during the week, but the workis interesting, the money is good & weekends are free.

Depends on your priorities really....

Don't forget the seasons. Nice this time of year when birds are tweeting and you still get back in the light and can have a beer in the garden. A LOT different in November when it's dark, cold and miserable at both ends of the day. I personally hate long commutes as life is too short to waste that many hours a week. dl

I've just started doing a 35 mile commute into the peaks to Castleton. I mis being able to ride into work on the bike but hopefully the nice drive in should compensate.

Yes most days I drive from The Land of the Gods up to Lytham St Annes and if I dont I'm driving an 80 mile round trip to deepest darkest South Manchester...
Thankfully all the trips to Lytham are covered by business mileage
WHichever of the two places I go to, they both take 70mins getting in and 50mins getting back

I'm currently doing an 80 mile commute in my Scooby

Was only about 20 miles a day but I've recently moved in with my gf in Oldbury so now do 80 miles up and down the M5 everyday

I really don't mind the extra time as it only take around 40 mins each way, used to take me 20 mins from Cheltenham by the time I drove across town. But it is costly especially with the current fuel prices. Think I may be needing a cheap oil burner soon and keep the Scoob for weekends. Or just sell it and get another when we move somewhere a bit more convienient

I commuted Northampton to North of Leicester (j21a + 6 miles) around 100 miles per day for six months. Is was a boring trip up the M1 and back but only took me an hour each way at mostly legal speeds as the traffic was light, most seemed to be going the other way to me!

Had i been going the other way then i recon the journey would have increased by 50%.

I left the job for other reasons but it was manageable. I found the time useful organising my day in my head before i got to work and unwinding listening to music etc on the way home

100 miles, in 1 hour = average of 100mph. If "most" of the time you were at legal speeds, you must have been doing some blasts at well over 100mph to make up for it

When I was doing my travelling, I did consider a B&B for during the week.

Thats it in a nutshell. I just cant understand people who live massive distances from work, then spend hours and £££s commuting every day. What a waste of your life. By the time you get home and get something to eat, it must be time for bed!

Mine is a round trip of 4 miles, about 20 mins a day.

Hello

Because it depends what you want in life. In my case it was my decision, it was a good job opportunity and I didn't want to move. They paid the fuel thankfully....

too right.

Can easily stay in my local deadend job that bores me 8 hours a day or have a boring 3 hour drive a day. Just depends if the money is worth it now
