I've been doing this trip for just under 2 years. 2000-2002 I was doing more or less the same journey.

Costs of travel in diesel terms are 20 gallons of diesel a week more or less. Do roughly 40 mpg in my Volvo at my "crusin" speed. 15-20% more if a lighter foot

Car has £300 services every 12K miles.
Car has 1 set of tyres per year @ £250 for 4
Insurance is £440

God knows what depreciation is but I bought a comfortable car to last 5 years over 5 years, expecting it to be worth deposit on the next new one or drive another 200,000 miles in it and get a toy

Car is 19 months old, 67.5k miles, cost £25K and is now worth £14K trade but as I said my intention is to drive it for 200K + miles.

I do long trips like this regularly, eg. Aylesbury <--> Stafford, fortunately they're with work and I'm based from home so I don't have to be there for 9 and my fuel was paid for. Takes about 2 1/2 hours each way at legal speeds

Even with those taken car of, it is still tiresome, at the end of the day I am completely knackered and in pain and thus cannot get to sleep.

If I was having to be there for 9 and leave at 5 I would be looking for a new job, no doubt about it. I'm probably going to look for a new job anyway. Anyone need an IT worker in the bucks area who can do more than just spout bull**** buzzwords while waving an MCSE certificate around?

Mine is a round trip of 4 miles, about 20 mins a day.

''ve just started doing a 35 mile commute into the peaks to Castleton. '

I have just started commuting to Castleton, I assume you mean the one near Rochdale, just changed jobs and dobled my commute each way from 13 to 26 miles, feels quite a bit more of a journey but I cant moan based on what people seem to be doing, with me it was a case of not going anywhere career wise so put a CV out and ooo err bugger they want to employ me, all happened a bit quick really but 2 days in it seems alright, pity a fair chunk of my extra cash will be paying for petrol, I think there may be a tractor in my future.

They did say at interview I could start early and finish a bit early to miss the worst of the traffic but they dont seem as keen now, home working was mentioned as well but not since, oh well, just get on with it I suppose.

I just seemed a longer day but to be honest it wasnt, I think its just the mental stress of actually doing something and trying to impress.

Took 50 mins this morning and about 45 back.

I've had 5 years of 250 miles a day ( Southampton to Luton ) and you do get used to it. All that stopped recently for me, but if the money was right ( which it was at the time ) I'd do it again. And I might if T5 at Heathrow pays the money when they're ready for decorators.
I justified the distance by setting myself a 'review of circumstances' time of two years before taking the work on. After two years I decided the travelling wasn't as bad as it might have been and kept at it. Found this the best way of psyching myself up to it.
Good luck if you go for it.

Ray-li if this job offers long term improvements in you career possibilities then you have to get a diesel shed that does 50mpg and give it a go Ultimately if you learn new marketable skills you will be in a better position if you decide to move back to where you are now after a year. I would use a motorbike through the summer and a diesel shed in the winter to keep costs down but its up to you.

150 mpd on a bike is wearing and the prob is sometimes that you go in dry and come home wet LOL

I did it for 6 months and no speed gain either! The number of visits to petrol stations gets wearying too...

I do 22 each way at the mo.... i looked at going to farnborough, its was 60 miles one way and would take 1 hour 40 if i went cross country it dropped to 43 miles and took 1 hour 27

i did it for two interviews, and then decided i wouldnt take the job if offered... it meant an 8 hour day would be a 12 and any longer would be a pita

Hello

That tires after a while. Well,it did with me anyway! I now work in the UK, and at home most of the time. And 1 week every 4 or 5 weeks I work in America.

Having said that I stay up (generally working) whilst at home until close of business on the East Coast of America.

I've been doing about 85 miles round trip every day (round the M25) since 1989 - although I work from home Friday's now. Frankly it stinks - I have to leave home at 6.30am every morning to make the journey sensible. Don't put yourself in this situation - move closer or take another job. Once you've put down roots at either end it gets harder to change.

used to do 150 miles aday round trip on secondment. time and miles paid by work from home. at 40p a mile the money was ok, i made up loads of time as well, but try getting a day off on flexi. ended up paying me my accrued time as well. stuck it for about a year, but was totally fubar'd after it. made plenty of money though. nice deposit for a house which wasnt bad.

Nope, castleton in the peak district derbyshire.

I would like to get a diesel but by the time I've swapped cars etc the cost saving will be negligable. My post is based on a 9month contract so I could potentially get a job closer to home at the end of the year if I'm finding it 2much of a struggle.

Will look good on the CV though.

Try and push for your flexi time as it makes it a lot easier...
