Thumbs down MFI - why they will go bust!

Been to MFI today, against my better judgement, because they were total crap 20 years ago ......... however, give then a chance lewis!

Anyway, found a very nice recliner chair I fancy ...... 'How much is delivery' I ask. As the poster on the wall doesn't cover the cost of the item I may be purchasing, an error on their own poster! Doesn't bode well, however - give them a chance.

"Don't know Sir, let me ask" says teen assistant

He returns, "£25'ish Sir"

"ish?" I say ...... "why 'ish? ...... never mind, what is the delivery time?"

"2, 3 or maybe 4 weeks Sir, but not longer than 6 weeks"

WTF???

So, my conclusion is as it was 20 years ago ......... they are utter, utter ****e at customer service - and they haven't even got my money yet!

They should have gone bust 20 years ago - how are they hanging on??

Anyway - anyone recommend a good place to buy a quality reclining chair?

Pete

IKEA has made it affordable to make your house look nice. I have loads of stuff from there, but it's almost disposable...

For real quality, we've gone to a local retailer. For our new house, we have on order a solid walnut dining table with cream leather chairs. It's different and I couldn't see us getting something that quality from IKEA, but I wouldn't go there to get it.

IKEA is what it is. Even posh people go there....

well said, Clare... nothing wrong with Ikea kit.. it serves a purpose.. is bloody good if youve young kids around as no matter how careful they are things will get wrecked and as you said... it IS to a degree disposable..

Why go to MFI then?

Your son must be well in his thirties, can't he buy his own?

As you yourself say Pete, fools and their money! If you saw how easy they are to manufacture and the mark up you certainly wouldn't pay that sort of money!

I think I may have to do some time on the shop floor as it happens - policy apparently to win the respect of the staff. I'll have to get a Top Man suit and some hair gel

Lead by example has always been my motto, and never ask someone to do something you yourself cannot is another. The staff alone can either make or break any business, enthusiasm and motivation is paramount, something sadly lacking nowadays! To be honest sales is the easiest side of the bedding trade I have experienced, as long as you can talk confidently with knowledge of products you will win customers over. Good luck with suit searching!

Yes, the business has been going for twenty two years. I joined it in 1991 and had an opportunity to invest some money into it a couple of years ago. Most of our trade is direct to the public as we both manufacture and retail. The majority of our customers are either repeat buyers or via recommendation from existing customers. It is hard work but very rewarding.
