Default Cycling question

I have a mountain bike that is a big lumbering (but comfy) dollop, the brakes are amazing but it is such a pig on the road, I also have a traditional road bike with skinny tyres that I used for the first time in ages after using the mountain bike all the time, what a revelation, it goes like the clappers !

But, its like having root canal surgery with those tyres, my hands hurt cos I hit a pothole (bit dark on the way back) and the same bump threw the front led light off, stopped found half of it and was scouring the road for the rest of it when some **** in a big BMW went through at about 3 times the speed limit crushing the lens that I had just spotted in the road, choice was dive in front of said BMW and grab it but I wasnt prepared to die for a ten quid bike lamp or hope he missed it, he didnt, in fact I think he heard it land and drove out specially as he was the only car for about ten minutes !

Anyway, I want a new bike, suggestions please, I want the speed of the racer with a bit more comfort, light weight and I do quite like the drop handlebars, no suspension required though I am quite keen on the disk brakes even though I suspect they add too much weight and complexity.

Any ideas ?

Have you thought of building your own?

Various Cos do a sort of hybrid.
Go for a STEEL frame (more flex) and 25c tyres, and really a pair of dura -ace brakes will i can assure you stop you quite adequatley...

Trek 8000 is very much a hardtail MB but it is a great bike. Very light, Shimano deore lx pretty much everything with an xt derailleur and hydraulic discs. My only gripe is the Shimano chain which will be replaced with an sram power link chain when it goes.

My 8000:
