Baby milk question
Plenty of fertile people here who I'm sure can help
Just bought a tin of baby milk powder for newborns.
It says I should go through a whole palaver to make one dose of milk each time we need it. We only need 50ml a time, if I follow the instructions on the tin I'll have barely finished making one dose before she needs the next.
Surely I can make up 24hrs' worth and keep it in a bottle in the fridge, then just shake it, decant and warm 50ml each time? Or do all the vitamins and magical goodness just disappear after an hour?
Brand is Aptamil HA1 (with Milupan) FWIW.
Thanks

Congratulations on the new arrival Brendan. Just asked the Mrs and she made up milk for 24 hours and kept it in the fridge fine and our little one had Aptamil as well. Once heated up though it must be used within 1 hour at which point it will have gone off.

I used to make up 6 bottles at a time, even on 50ml to start off on, I would let the kettle cool down then after doing the bottles leave to stand to cool down even more before putting in the fridge, then everytime one needed to be used I used to warm it up in a jug of warm water, I didn't always need 6 for 24 hrs worth so usually 1 would be left over to be thrown away.

My daughter has recently had her second boy. She makes up enough bottles to last 24hrs and as above, once they have been brought up to room temp they are discarded after an hour. She does however follow the making up rules, something about letting the boiled water cool to a certain temp then refrigerating asap.
Congrats on the new one. Enjoy every minute, they'll soon be grown up and having grand children !

Thanks. Babies also need to get enough milk - their immune systems don't build up very quickly when they lose weight rather than gaining it.
I was wondering when someone would make such a comment without knowing the facts, as usual

Sometimes you have to supplement breast milk for a number of reasons I'm not going to go into here.
Brendan, what I used to do when I went out with my baby was take a small sterilised container of milk powder and a few sterilised bottles of cooled, boiled water and made up as I needed. This meant the bottles didn't need to be kept cold if made up.
Congrats BTW and hope you get some useful info

Oh right facts... did we evolve over the last 1000 years on processed powdered milk then.
I can understand supplements if there are personal health issues involved, that's a different matter entirely.

It is the colostrum of the new breast feeding mother that 'transfers' a complete immune system to the newborn baby. However, colostrum is only produced for a short while (days, and at most weeks) after birth.
Once past this period, the immune system doesn't come into it.

My 3 are proof that you don't necessarily need the goodness of breast milk, I never even tried it as I didn't want to, its all down to peresonal choice and fair play to those who do it.
I had a friend who had 3 children same time as me and her's were breast fed but they were forever poorly and at the doctors for antibiotics, mine were hardly ever poorly, no infections, no antibiotics. It could of course been coincidence.
It's all down to the individual.
Congrats and good luck

Bottle fed babies may be "tubbier" than breast fed ones but not necessarily healthier.
Bit of an empty statement there R tracey, without a "test subject" how do you know they wouldn't have grown up more intelligent / stronger / taller / fitter than they already are??

If the mother of my child refused to give it breat milk for the first week of birth I think there would be some very heated arguments and a couple backhands
*Joking about the arguments back handers straight away no questions asked.
**I really am joking

I am not saying they are healthier it is probably coincidence. I am not saying either way, I was just proving a point that anything can happen, so at the end of the day it's down to the parents to decide what they feel comfortable and happy doing.
There is no way of proving anything. Anything can happen to anyone of us in our lives and we have to deal with that if it arises.
All mine to date are healthy and happy and have had no real problems in their lives (which we are very lucky and grateful for).

As for the milk comments ignore them. Jack wouldn't drink breast milk, nothing to do with not trying and he was losing weight too so perseverance wasn't an option. So he went onto Aptamil and then onto Neutramagen due to severe allergic reaction to anything remotely related to cows milk. He was close to hospitalisation with eczema that made him look as though he had been in a fire, they were going to wet wrap him at one stage but thankfully the Neutramagen sorted him out, that stuff is excellent if any intolerance flares up with powdered milk and its certainly done him no harm with the size he is!
