Question Sat Nav recommendations please

It is finally time for me to enter 2006 and get a sat nav system.

My main requirement is to be able to get accurate up to date maps with a post code search facility and preferably something that doesn't need to be plugged in continuously.

I have been trawling the various sites and have seen the TOMTOM's seem to get the best write ups but the following questions need answering

I don't currently have a blue tooth kit in the car and need one, is the bluetooth answering facility in the tomtom 500 any good?

Is the 700 worth the extra £40 over the 500? I am planning a trip or max 2 to France this summer and a european map book would be £15 is the european map in the tomtom good enough? Does it offer anything else?

Would a tomtom one do all I want for >£100 less? Does it act as a handsfree bluetooth kit (or is the one in the 500 useless)?

Is there another sat nav worth looking at?

I know it has probably been asked before and I have checked search but there is so much about the tomtoms on SN it is near impossible to find the answers.

Thanks in advance

Kev

I have the TomTom Go 500 and it's bladdy brilliant. The handsfree feature works a treat too (Nokia company phone).

There are some new Tom Tom units coming out this month, so you might want to hold fire, although you can get the 'old' ones at a discounted rate.

Have had my navman icn520 for 6 months now, thought it was the mutz nutz at first,

But using it latley i have felt like throwing it out the window

example 1, Blackpool last weekend ,turn right 200yds ,so i did, turn left 500yds,second exit at roundabout, left 80yds then rurn right 150yds

only to find i was on the same road i had turned right off it sent me on a lap of all the back streets instead ov sending me straight ahead

Also coming back from Manchester a couple of months ago it was trying to tell me to turn off the m62 at halifax all i needed to do was follow the m62 tho leeds and join the m1.Navman is handy that it fits in your pocket.

It was asnot as if i had bought the cheapest unit Navman was £50 dearer than tom tom 500 wish i had bought that now
