Halogen light question (part 2)
After my "Light gone phut" thread (http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthread.php?t=498545), I tried to get a replacement or repaired transformer dimmer footswitch. After waiting three weeks or more for the local electrical shop to finally admit they couldn't repair or replace it, they came up with a ?sensible suggestion. Why not just replace the six halogen 12v bulbs (G4) with halogen 230v bulbs, then buy a standard 230v dimmer switch?
Can anyone say if this is such a bad idea? The light cost about 200quid, I don't mind paying 20 to replace the bulbs and another 10-20 for a dimmer switch, if it means using it again (and also not worrying about the transformer going phut in the future). Chap in the shop says they used to be 12v bulbs just as 230v ones didn't exist 3 years (or so) ago, but now 230v ones are made, there's no reason to continue using them. I wondered about things like safety (light is primarily stainless steel), plastic lampholders (overheating?), cost/increase of electricity, but I know nothing.
Any reason why I can't just "convert" it to 230v and carry on using it?
Thanks for your opinions.

I don't use 12v any more now that the mains voltage bulbs are available.
Heat output should be the same if you use the same wattage bulbs.
The bulbs have different fittings though - to prevent people putting 12v ines into 240v sockets - so it will cost more than just the bulbs.
I'd be surprised if it can be converted economically....
