Default Going to resign in the morning !

Apart from my two weeks decorating, I found the time to get a new job so I will let my boss know in the morning, I have my offer letter and pack of random stuff so thats covered but not signed yet, I have always thought about it and been keen to be in the position to do it but now it actually comes down to it I am a bit nervous having been there over 7 years, also I am fairly central to a few things that happen, no man is an island and all that but they will be a bit stuck for a few weeks, regardless of me going they are really struggling to recruit due to low (for the job) wages and being a bit too picky considering. Also after advice on notice period, it may be three months which is bad so ones the legal standpoint, I only want to do a month.

Any suggestions as to how to approach this ?

I am not sure whether she (my boss) will have a clue, she is pretty perceptive but I went for a promotion that I didnt get despite being qualified and already doing it so that may not be a complete surprise to her.

So it could go the following ways, Place your bets NOW !

1/ Accepts resignation, arranges finishing date, very business like. Says either sorry to see you go

1a/ Accepts resignation, arranges finishing date, we were going to sack you anyway you turd.

2/ Manages to promote me by a miracle to avert my departure or offers me contract on 300 plus per day.

3/ Accepts resignation, marches me off site having watched me clear my desk, this is a possibility due to security reasons.

I am expecting option 1, hoping for option 3 (month off paid, cool ) and at the outside 100/1 number 2 which would complicate matters anyway.

Public sector have to do things properly, so you'd never get promoted just by being good at your job. That would be unfair to outsiders!!

I have never been anywhere where I'd had to give 3 months notice, so I can't advise.

'Public sector have to do things properly'

No, they have to fanny about for months, plus, I have seen people get promoted by throwing a wobbler when somebody else got a job internally that they went for. The trouble is I like working there, I just cant afford it anymore, everything is rising in price faster than my wages and all my colleagues (who do the same job) are contractors on two or three times my salary.

There are no competitors to worry about !

Well, they must be different to us then. If someone threw a wobbler, they'd not get promoted!! They'd have counselling for their issues!

i hope u enjoy the new place of work as the money can't always make up for a job u hate.
I've always said i'd take a job paying 20k over a 40k job if it means i enjoy going to work. I know in reality sometimes we have no choice but u should seriously take it into consideration.

I know how you feel, The IT dept i work in workforce is about 3/4 contractors. At the moment their are 3 contractors doing the job I've just been hired for. Incredible, 3 people on double my salary.

The funniest is that they've been their for years and will probably never leave. They are taken off one project and stuck on another.

They normally have to give you three months but you only give them one month. Check your contract of employment.

Prepare a transition plan covering what you need to handover to someone else and how long it will take to do.

Fit the plan to your one month window and have this ready for them if they suggest you need to stay 3 months. That way you can demonstrate you are committed to leaving cleanly and properly and they can't really argue unless they are just being "difficult".

Good luck.

Check your contract.

In one of my previous roles they never gave me a proper contract (went from temp to perm), even though I badgered them about it for months.

I then got a new job elsewhere and because they hadn't done me a contract I had no notice period, so left the same day - I was the only one doing the job, and it took 4 weeks to train up for it
