Question Hoax? Warning about signs on your door...

Just received an email "Warning! Send to everyone!" about finding signs on your front door/gate. Things like Arrow up means "easy to rob in the morning", arrow down means "easy to rob in the afternoon", 7 means "House empty in July", 8 means "House empty in August", something like a syringe means "old person alone at home all day". (It's in Portuguese)

I'm convinced this is a hoax. Can anyone prove it? I've checked snopes already.

Many thanks.

Now we know the codes we can stuff it up - and then bring down e-mail servers all over the world by sending the solution to everyone we know

Allegedly, in Spain there is a symbol system used by African/East European criminal immigrants to identify "easy targets". Whether this is an urban myth or not I cannot say. I heard about it through word and mouth and via the local papers.

There is probably some truth there, but I'd say the e-mail is a scare hoax. Unless its original source was local to your whereabouts, as it certainly isn't a worldwide problem

I believe the term "mark" came about from con artists putting a chalk mark on the person they intended to target. While thieves may do something similar, I doubt it would be as obvious as described. Also consider how they would know what month somebody was going to be away, and how to show which days and that the mark would remain for some time. Also consider that a large amount of burglary is opportunist and I doubt the pros would go about leaving evidience.

As I said, when you see the paper - no letterhead, simple text, text at the bottom (typed by some 8 yr old in MS Word) says "This information was given by the (METROPOLITAN) POLICE. PLEASE SEND IT TO ALL YOUR FAMILY, FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES" - it might has well have a big HOAX in diagonal watermark. I'm just looking for proof/info that this has already been discredited so I can forward it with my reply.

This was actually an article in the newspaper last week.
Seems there is some sort of code which villains leave for their counterparts to indicate whether a house is worth robbing or not etc. There were about 8 different diagrams and their meanings.

Seems weird a bit weird to me, hope it is a hoax.

Reminds me of the myth regarding flashing your lights at cars with no headlights on; the gangland initiation killing thing. Someone at my brothers work (Herts ambulance service) posted that note on the noticeboard, thereby making it "official". I had some warnings from my parents about this since it was "real" otherwise it wouldn't have been on the notice board, but despite my sending them 10-15 URLs dating back to 1998 showing it to be a hoax I wasn't believed, because it was on the "official" ambulance notice board

Didn't you read my post above? "It was on the Herts Ambulance notice board, it MUST be true" - just an example of how things can become "non-hoaxes". Assuming this one is

Ok, so has anyone here actually seen any of these symbols painted on houses anywhere?

And what's the symbol for "Don't bother with this house fellow burglars 'cos they have big dogs, weapons, a leaning towards extreme violence and nothing of any value whatsover?"

Apparently they also put "marks" on your property if you have unsecured wireless broadband and they return and sit outside your house using your internet looking up dodgy stuff and going on sites that you have to pay for and you dont know a thing about it until you get a massive bill through your door!

Consider yourselves warned!
