The trade price for a £995 Tag Carrera is.......
£481.
......and for a £1275 Tag Carrera GMT is £664.
The Beaverbrooks sales assistant mistakenly left the price list on the desk today.
If you were going to ring round and wanted a £995 Tag,what price would you aim for.

I'd suggest that for a Tag, £900 would be a fair price in a UK high-street jewellers. For a rarer watch (Rolex Daytona in Silver or Panerai PAM00161, for instance), you might be pushed to even get on the waiting list, let alone get money off one.

What about VAT though.
Is that included in the trade price. Then it works out they buy it for £481 then sell it for £848 plus £148 VAT making £995.
Profit of £367.

50-60% is standard dealer marging on high end watches, Rolex is 30-40%
20-25% is standard discount on a Tag but I would be very careful of buying a Tag if you have nay concern re resale value , a used one will usually fetch around 40% of RRP

don't think the Panerai 161 is that hard to get hold of ( or at least any harder than other mainstream Panerais )
the 203 is a different matter

Black dial or white dial, that is the question.

I can't see many retail stores letting people walk away at the moment, you wil just have to push them pretty hard.
That tags a nice watch too.

Got it wrong. With VAT it costs them £630 so they make £365 profit.£750 they only make £120 and i save £250 so i dont think they'd go for that.£800 and its 50-50, but if they sell it for less then dont they pay less VAT?

Selling price £995.00
Trade Cost of watch -£481.00
VAT -£148.19
Profit = £365.81
£365.81 subtract staff, lighting, heat, insurance, alarm, rent, rates etc etc
Profit = not as much as you think!

Just to clarify my opinion - it is all very well making decent profit when decent service and advice is given, but this is extremely rare these days. When I buy something I have researched it extensively on the Internet and therefore when I buy it they are only acting as an agent. Why should they make so much profit from me.

Having first hand experience at this, generally they would be better at losing the customer because there is no point in devaluing a product if you dont need to.
For example I import an item that costs me around £150 each I can sell it for £800 and I sell lots (more than I can cope with) but if I wanted to I could sell it for £250 but why would I want to do that???
People generally pay what they think an items worth, which is what sets market prices, what you think is expensive other people think is cheap!
Margins (and profits) can be cut very thin but you still need to factor in money to cover the cost of customer service incase the item went wrong (likely as its a tag!) as well as the normal overheads.
How about this: they do sell the item and make just £50 profit after paying VAT BUT they only accept debit cards for payment, you get no receipt, you get no warranty or guarantee, (ie if it breaks tomorrow tough luck), you get no bag etc etc

Challenge me.
If it was me i would go into town with £900 in my pocket and hope to be home within the hour.
You are spending the best part of £1k on a wrist watch and faffing about like Del Boy and Rodders to get it!
If you can afford a £1k watch then your time is worth more than you are putting in to save an extra few £££ here are there.....just buy the thing and get on with some work!
If the saving is that important put £25 in your pocket, go to Argos and be home within 30 mins.

Kiwi,
Not sure which parts of Asia, you are talking about but I spend a fair amount in quite a few "asian" coutrys and the mark ups can be as high if not higher than here. Especially for branded goods or quality products.
e.g. I wanted a Kenwood in car TV and it was cheaper here, PSP it was cheaper here, 100% Cotton bed sheets and pillow cases (much much much cheaper here!)
Genrally if items are cheaper in a country most of the time there is a reason for it, rice is much cheaper in China than here because they grow it, Levis are cheaper in the USA because they are manufactured there (or close by in Mexico) and are a traditoinal US product.
Have you ever tried to buy Bake beans in another country???

And no I wont be telling what I sell but im sure most people would be too lazy to do the work involved!
If lots of people imported the same product the price would go down, and I would sell something else, thats why manufacturers normally try and supply only some shops to keep the price high!
