Talking Europe Road Trips - who's done one?!

I did a eurotrip last summer with a few mates in a Lotus Elise and TVR Chimaera and it was superb, and Im looking forward to doing one again this year, and hopefully covering more countries.

Last year we went down the south of France, Monaco (few laps of the GP track!), into Italy (how fit are the Italian birds!! ), Switzerland (went to the top of the Schilthorn where they filmed On Her Majestys Secret Service - was class!) then back through France.

Has anyone done similar, and maybe covered more countries? Anyone ventured towards Eastern Europe - Czech Republic or Poland? Are they worth a visit? English commonly spoken?

WYIOC (West Yorks) are planning a jaunt to the Milau bridge in May, and I believe SMACS are returning to Stelvio next year ( Last times ). I may be doing a big 3-4 weeker mostly through France (LeMans, Reims, Monaco, Millau) next year, but nipping into Italy & Switzerland (for Stelvio and other pass's) and Germany (for Autobahns & Ring). It would make a great summer hoilday, but even better with mates if I can talk the missuse into us not being alone

We've done a couple of trips over the last few years. The first we went from Calais, through Belgium (about 20 mins!) and went through Cologne and Frankfurt, down the Autobahn to Switzerland, along Lake Geneva, through the Alps and dropped down to Milan, a bit of ski-ing on the way back and then a day through France.

The second trip we went to Lyon, some mountain resort, Turin, the riviera brifely, then back through Lyon, Dijon and Paris.

Am probably going to the world cup with a mate who has an M3 and another who has a Maserati this summer.

A mate of mine drove through Amsterdam, Prague, Budapest and Milan over a month or so and loved it, but it was in a camper van and not really my style!

Driven a couple of times into Europe, and used Drive Alive - they were really good as you can plan your itinerary online, and were very helpful when we had to cut short a trip due to a family bereavement. Didn't venture too far though - been to Belgium (the Belgians can tailgate like no other ), The Netherlands and Germany.

To be completely honest I only really saw bits of the centre and Goldfingers, a rather nice gentlemans club off Wenceslas Square Whaaaat it was a blokes only holiday

It's a nice place certainly, when I was there last they were doing a lot of work sprucing up the centre and making it a much nicer place. I think it's probably going to turn a bit touristy soon as there are now cheap flights there.

I would go there now before it gets too expensive.

I have done a circa 2000 mile 'road trip' with the MSA every year for the past 11 years, so have driven in a fair few countries. Done all the obvious ones France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Andora etc.,.. In 2000 we went France, Germany, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Hungary - it was a heck of a drive (especially in a 30 year old car) but great fun, helped by doing it with about 150 other cars and with the backing of the MSA. In the Eastern European countries there were not many problems except people were pulled over a lot by the police, allegedly for speeding or similar, but in reality the real reason was to extract some western item such as a baseball cap or pair of sunglasses from the driver! Language can be a problem, we were stopped in Slovakia and to this day I have no idea what, if anything I had done! The only english word the two officers knew between them was 'passport'! Other then that it was great fun and well worth the effort, some spectacular drives and the locals were fascinated by all the cars they had never seen before. Don't forget the Czech's are great engineers and we got a lot of interest from them.

In 2005 we went round Denmark and Sweden, this year it is a more conventional European route but the rumour is we may be going to St Petersburg next year!

Any specific questions fire away and I will try and answer them.

Kind regards,
Robin

The "elise" cars aren't that bad.

A group of us with VX220's did the south of France (with a visit to Monaco) last summer. Fantastic time.
