Question

How can I find the make of motherboard and chipset in a PC without taking it apart? Are there any free apps that can do this? Or do I need to 'open the box'?

Enter the BIOS settings when you boot up - usually by pressing DEL, have a look through the menus, there should be some info in there.

Alternatively...

If your PC crashes 90% of the time you have a Via Appollo chipset.

If it only crashes 75% of the time then it's probably an Intel.

Something like SiSoft Sandra will tell you under Mainboard Information. Think you can download an evaluation version just to have a quick look.

You can get it here (missus) http://www.sisoftware.demon.co.uk/sandra

Does lots of other useful things as well

I've aleady looked in BIOS but there's no info there.

For info, it's a TIME built system about a year and a half old with an Athon 700mhz processor. We bought it as part of a deal with the goverment for teachers to buy their own PCs. Good value, but TIME are not that hot on giving technical info on their systems...
