Has anyone used one of those magnetic water descalers as seen in these mail order catalogues to rid the home of hard water ? Do these things work and if so can anyone recomend a brand ?

Not fitted it yet so can't comment personally but had the 'SESI Salamander' electrolytic scale inhibitor recomended to me by a friend who's a plumber.

The physics/chemistry of them sounds like complete bo11ocks to me (presuming you're talking about the 30-odd quid ones that have a bit of wire you wrap around the pipe). I saw an article somewhere once (may have been in Maplins) about how to make one for a fiver or so.

The problem with the wrap around wire ones (and I guess any other sort that doesn't involve a filter) is that they are designed to keep the scale in the water. This means that while your pipes might not clog up, the kettle still will, and you will still get water marks on taps, sinks etc.
Hope this helps :-)

They use the same principle as the broquet fuel catalyst.
The principle is based on what us engineers call pseudo-science mumbo jumbo. You make a complete load of b*ll*cks, throw in some scientific sounding words (any will do as most readers won't have a clue), and then con a load of gullible people out of lots of cash.
Clever really.
