LOL... yeah, you might be right..! All the ones with the effective solutions are fast asleep...!!
Extra info for the morning solutioneers:-
I work 12 hour shifts. Can be 2 days, 3 days or 2 nights, 3 nights or 4 nights. Normally get 2 or 3 days off in between shifts. start at 0600/1800 or 0700/1900.
Seems like my body clock is moving further round, ie can't sleep 'til about 0400/0500, then don't/can't wake until late morning.
Doing me nut in it is. Off to try again now.
Any other Scoobynetters in the same boat..?

Have a wnak
Seriously though, I work weekend nights 6pm-6.30am friday-sunday and mondays can be a pain to balance the sleep to try and return to a more normal pattern during the week. It's not as bad in summer as the warm weather and nice sunny days make it easier to stay up and get on with life, but when it's cold, wet and dark through the sh!tty bit of winter (Nov-Mar) then bed seems very appealing when your tired. If I try to stay up through these months I end up knackered and cranky. If I try for 2-3 hours and then get up I can sometimes be like a zombie for the rest of monday, but do sleep monday night and am more normal by tuesday. If however I oversleep on a monday then I end up like now, posting on SNet at 4-5am. Doesn't bother me as much these days as I'm well used to it, so even if I'm out of kilter I can adjust my pattern to settle by the next day. There are sometimes weeks where it doesn't go right though and I end up drowsy all day and awake all night for the whole week. Couldn't work mon-fri 9-5 though

Sorry, can't help...
I work shifts, and sleep like a baby! For almost 7 yrs now.
I've heard night nurse is good...
People say working shifts cause stress/ill-health etc. but I get 17 weeks off a year, never have to drive in rush hour, get paid thousands of pounds on top of my normal salary - life is just a breeze.
Only downside is 2300-0700 and 1500-2300 shifts interfere with the social life a bit.

Agree with the above When I told the people at my last job (m-f 9-5) what the new deal was they were aghast. I got a 47% pay increase to work 2 1/2 hours less a week, with less responsibility (went back to being a pleb from management) and effectively 100 extra days holiday a year. As we are unsupervised on a weekend we can organise our workload to suit ourselves, so we work like mad fri and sat night to give us a free sunday, when we watch DVD's, surf the net, sleep and generally relax in readiness for the week (note week, not weekend) ahead. Great feeling as you're driving home on monday morning amongst all the half asleep, still pished ordinary folk that you are free until friday evening. Mon, tue, wed, thu, and most of fri all to yourself Gotta be better than just sat & sun, when everywhere's busy.

I'm a fellow insomniac
Pain in the ****. Best way to try to get some sleep is to clear your mind of any "issues" you might have going on at least half an hour before going to bed. Putting music on or reading a book is usually effective enough. And milky drinks can be helpful. Try not to go the Nitol etc route - it doesn't take long for these to become ineffective and then you're in a worse situation!

I have been an insomiac for nearly 4 years and I only work 8-4:30 M-F. My brain just wont shut down and I will lie awake for the entire night. Eventually it got so bad so I went to the doctors. I have tried many different tablets but the one I am on now is Zolpidem 10mg.
I must admit if I could go back, I wouldnt have started taking them - but at the time I even tried counselling and nothing worked and I was at the end of my tether.
Keep trying all the 'old wives tales' remedies first and maybe that will kick start you back into relaxing before bed.
Good luck

Some great replies there, quality humour mixed with errrr... sensible-ness..!!
Agree with all what's been said about shifts though, it works out that I only do 14 (12 hour) days a month..!!
Couldn't go back 9-5, that'd be worse than not sleeping , plus the pay cut would be horrific.
If the internet wasn't available and 24 hour telly didn't exist, then there'd be nowt to do at 3am..!! Maybe that's the answer, get shot of the telly and the pc...
Some good answers there though, keep 'em rolling...!!

I used to work varying hours (ie some days would be say 11am-3pm and others may be 8pm-11.30pm or whatever) - and sometimes I would have trouble getting to sleep - even when seemingly tired.
I now work a regular 9-5 and have no probs sleeping at all. Go to sleep when head hits pillow and wake up just before the alarm goes off.
Shift work is supposed to be very bad for you, and I often hear how shift works have shorter life spans...

Don't work shifts but never been good at sleeping . Night Nurse works for me everytime, apart from some sleeeping tablets I once got in the USA and that was just from a supermarket - they were ace.

As has been said above - try and make sure you do a lot of exercise. I've started running and commuting to work on the bike along with going to the gym and it certainly can't hamper your efforts at trying to sleep.
Make sure you don't sleep in the day even if you are tired.
Get up at the same time even if you have had a bad nights sleep.
Don't eat a couple of hours before bed.
Try camomile tea before bed.
Alter your sleeping area around
Open the window before going to bed for half an hour so the room is not stuffy.
Don't watch tv or use the computer for 2/3 hrs before bed
Set aside 30 mins before going to bed to relax i.e. read, talk or listen to some relaxing music.
Don't go to bed before you are tired.
Finally have a look at what is going on in your life that is preventing you from switching off. Reduce stress etc.
All of the above is imo but I do find it can help.
I know it can be the worse thing to not sleep but your body has to shut down at some point so you will eventually sleep.
Good luck You will be fine
