What would you have done?
Driving down Wrotham Hill on the M20 tonight in lane 3 on my motorbike when I see a man and a child on the hard shoulder. The man is dragging the child at a very fast walking pace. In the split second I hand to decide what to do (had traffic behind me doing the speed limit) I carried on riding thinking they must have broken down and he was holding them tight to keep them safe. Then realised as I got further down the hill there was no broken down car before or after where I saw them and I started to get very concerned. Luckily at the bottom of the hill there had been a minor RTA and I pulled over and told the policeman what I had seen. He thanked me for stopping and said that the police car just zooming past on the other side of the motorway was already on its way to investigate.
I have phoned Kent police to try and find out if the child is safe but the police couldn't tell me, all they wanted to know was everything I saw and all the details and said the incident was still ongoing and they will call me if they need more info. I am now very concerned about the child and feel very very guilty that I didn't stop to help It seems as though they haven't found them
Thing is no one else stopped either but lots of people reported the same thing. I just wish I had stopped when I saw them as now it appears as they haven't found the man and the child and the child could have come to some harm
I have a reference number and am trying to wait a sensible amount of time to call back to find out so as not to keep bothering them.
Nathan L or any other police on here is there anything I can do to find out what has happened as its doing my head in keep thinking if I had stopped and confronted the man the police may have arrived in time and the child would be safe?

You did the right thing in my book, ie, made the police aware, but also saved yourself the chance of being caught up in what might be a nasty situation..... if you;d stopped, who's to say that people wouldn't have reported the fact that you were there aswell...... you may have ended up being questioned yourself..... or worse!

Just called the police again. They couldn't find them, they just disappeared into thin air and although they are concerned due to the number of calls reporting it they have absolutely nothing to go on and can't do anything, they found no broken down car, they checked all the bridges and the entire area They said not to be worried and put it down to a domestic between the parent and the child and that I did the right thing in not stopping as the person could have had a weapon etc but it doesn't put my mind to rest. Two people don't just vanish into thin air when walking along the hard shoulder of the motorway!

Bravo - you cannot change was it done or worry about it. Given what lane you was in and quickly you would passed - stopping at police was the best thing and given that the police car was already on way, other people had seen it before you. Ignore comments like that one - at least you did stop and tell the police, many more would do nothing.

It was tonight at about 18.45 southbound on the M20, dark and raining and there was no where where they could have been heading, the side of the motorway they were on is just fields and they would never be able to cross the motorway that time of night, all 3 lanes are heavy with traffic southbound.
With all the bad stories you see on the news these days seeing **** like this is what worried me so much.

Could they not have stopped their car at the junction for the kid to take a leak... then he said he didnt want to go in the light, so the parent was p-o'd at having to walk down the hard shoulder in the rain... hence the quick march.
I hope it wasnt sinister, but to be honest, if you were one of those monsters.. then surely you wouldnt walk down a hard shoulder in full view of the general public?!
IMO, you did exactly what you should and could have done.. if it was a harmless situation then you wouldnt have been thanked for poking your nose in!! It is now in the hands of the Police, try not to loose any sleep over it.
Cheers,
Grant

FWIW I think you did the correct thing in the circumstances. It wasn't feasible for you to pull in at the time and probably when you could have found a road to turn around on they'd be gone anyway.
Fair play to you though B20 for being concerned, others wouldn't bother their ar$es.

If you had of stopped quickly on the motorway with other traffic about and caused an accident then you would have been in bother. You did the right thing, I wouldnt worry about it.
If a boy is missing then you will hear about it in your local press by late today or tomorrow. I think it is highly unlikely! Kidnappers / murderers dont usually frog march people down the hard shoulder of the motorway.

Bravo,
Do not tear yourself up over this bud. You did more than most folk would have done..... I bet literally hundreds of motorists passed them whilst passing comment on the incident without actually doing anything about it.
I'm sure there was nothing sinister about it, but even if there had been, the police would be aware of a missing child, or worse god forbid.
You said it yourself, hindsight is a wonderful thing, but rest easy knowing that you did your bit mate.
And I second what Bubba said

B2Zero,
It was a very difficult situation and you did the best thing you could have done. You could also have been in severe danger yourself if you had stopped. Far more sensible to tell the police as you did. its not easy to hop off a 'bike and be in an effective defensive position straight away either.
I see Gambino is stuffing his foot in his mouth yet again!
