there the hpi rush evo which is a fairly good car to begin with and pretty simple to maintain http://www.microtechracing.com/code/...40&subcatid=55 is about 160 onwards from other shops

There were once quite a few on here into RC, they may be lurking somewhere.
From what I can gather the nitro stuff can be a bit fiddly as the engines need careful tuning. Run them too rich and they don't work too well, too lean and they blow up, but provided you know what you're doing it shouldn't be that difficult to master. They also need re-building on a fairly regular basis.
That's just the engines, my experience with electric buggies is that you are always breaking something on them so be prepared to be spend a lot of money on spare parts. That said I had a lot of fun with mine.

Yep they're a lot of fun and also need a fair bit of tlc. I've got a couple, one electric and one nitromethane powered (both 4wd of course!) Haven't had either out for over a year due to house moves, etc. tho. Also might be worth getting an automatic brake too. I've got one fitted to the nitro car; it will cut the throttle and apply the brake if it loses signal from the transmitter - stops you chasing it down the street
