Loopholes will be found. Can you smoke in off licences? And can you drink your purchaces in store? Are hotels included? And how many rooms do you need to be classed as a hotel.

This whole thing is a complete load of media hype. Second hand smoke is b0ll0cks! Try walking along a pavement in London! The sh1te pumped out by buses and the soot and fumes on the tube is far worse than second hand smoke.
I understand not smoking in restaurants, but pubs and clubs will lose lots of money from this! I think better ventilation will be a better solution all round.

I'm guessing 'pub' but worth checking...

I think that although the media have concentrated on the ban affecting pubs and clubs, it actually applies to any enclosed public space (or something like that). I'm guessing that if tickets to the gig/nightclub are offered to the general public and there is a roof on the premises, there won't be any smoking going on inside.

Thank goodness. You'd complain if someone sat next to you farting all evening.. health aside, it's about the same - disgusting! Good riddance

Off licence.
As in - Licensed to sell alcohol for consumption "off" the premises.

Should have banned tobacco all together if they were really against smoking.
Oh wait, it’s the £9.3bn in revenue they collect compared to the £1.5bn they spend in smoking related diseases, nice little profit there.

Looking at the vote section (over 12k votes polled so far) of the news item, it appears 80% favour the total ban, 11% a partial one and 9% no change. Whether you like it or not, the will of the people has won through. The overwhelming majority of people want it banned and thus it has been banned.
Whether this is 'right' or not is neither here nor there, it's democracy in action, the public gets what the public wants.

<Selfish mode>
So, I go to the Pub on a Sunday afternoon, order a pint of Caffereys and pull out a Montecristo no.3. Sublime.
This small pleasure ends for me in the Autumn of '07 - how disappointing!
<Selfless mode>
So, set out to go to the Pub on a Sunday afternoon, realise I can't enjoy a smoke with my beer and abandon the visit. All the other patrons don't have to endure my second hand smoke or my inane ramblings - lucky beggers!
Serious question - can you still smoke in nightclubs and at gigs. If I go to Jazz Cafe on the Barbican will I have to nip out between numbers to have a draw?

Ventilation does work to a certain extent, but it has to be amzingly good (and very expensive) to work. The only place I've seen where it is totally effective is in BAT's building in London!

Good stuff.
I don't know how you can call the right to smoke in public a civil liberty when it is so unpleasant for most of the people in your vicinity. By all means do it in your own home or away from other people but not in their face. Like stated above, I enjoy a good fart, but how would people like it if I crop dusted last nights kebab odour all over them while they were out enjoying a pint?
