Just after they lay the new turf at Wembley I'd reckon. Should be good tough stuff they lay there.....

Throw a box of grass seeds down, far easier and much cheaper.

Why not just scarify the existing lawn, aerate it and then lay down some new seed next month? Simpler and probably cheaper.

think it may be fooked, was really thick and green last year, but very patchy and yellow now..

seed probably wouldn't last very well with the hound charging around over it..

maybe, but hoping if i get something thick enough so he cant rip the soil up through the grass, might help.. and the soil that the grass is laid on now is not very compacted, so tears up really easily..

I covered a totally bare area in my field approximately 20m x 20m using seed and you wouldn't know. That's with 2 GSD's bounding about too.

A couple of boxes of Wilko's grass seed and you're sorted.

Flagstones or concrete, and you'll probably get a few quid for your mower if you bang it on ebay.

Appropriate. Wilko is my dog's name, who's also responsible for the 'skid solo' race track round my garden. As for copying, it's either a case of 'great minds...' or 'the sincerest form of...'

its grass......not a bloody helicopter! it should be a simple purchase.

when you go to buy it there will be prob be 3 types, nice grass for proper lawns, tuff grass for people with kids running on it and chap nasty field grass for people that want to have a lawn the dog can destroy.....thats what you need.

Tiggs isn't far wrong Go and look in a garden centre, get the "rugby pitch" grass seed rather than the "putting green" grass seed.

(I went for the "in scorching sun all day" grass seed.)

BTW this far already and no-one's mentioned smoking?

But not the stuff that they use at the Millenium Stadium. One decent scrum and the turf comes flying off. Pitch ends up looking like a bunch of deranged moles have been let loose

Right, for the area I wanted to cover some years ago it was going to cost £650 to turf. I was happy to pay that until a pal of mine told me to give the seeds a go as it'll only cost £20 for 2 boxes, so nothing lost if it didn't work.

In no time I had a grassed area that looked superb.

The clock would suggest it was the former.

Very good

Quick side track - I just mailed some Welsh friends of mine saying that for the next game Wales are going to be sponsered by Specsavers so that they can see who they are tackling......(the guy carrying the ball!)

I could type a whole book on cultivating fine grass. It's not a single fix solution. It needs sadistic and obsessive nurturing only found in the most determinded of pensioners to reap the perfect garden

But I won't divulge the details

Common mistake is mowing too infrequently and cutting it too short, or mowing in cold/freezing weather allowing moss to take hold and thrive. Once a week is sufficient and maintain a length of 1.5 to 2" for a "used" lawn - A bowls green needs more attention to keep it short and healthy.

Aerate twice a year
Needs Lawn sand at least twice a year - rake/lightly scarify out moss and thatch for 2 weeks after treating
Feed n' weed fertiliser at least twice a year
Lay seed (use ryegrass seeds for used lawns) on bald patches 2-3weeks after intial treatment of the above and raking the ares to create loose soil and cover seeds with some cheap compost- avoid mowing seeded areas for a month, and keep new grass to a minimum of 2" and water regulary in dry weather.

Fookin 'ell. **** or what? I said the same thing in one sentence, twenty odd post ago.

Tip: don't use ballast as a substitute for sand if you're a tight **** like me who wanted to save money on a top dressing. It's taken all bloody winter to get rid of the pebbles.

My "****" lawn....
