Even more Lying Labour hypocrisy......
Buried deep in an 83 page document released today, Transport Secretary, Alistair Darling has put in place the mechanism for the closure of hundreds of miles of branch, and feeder railway lines across the UK
The government are doing this in order to save money on the present subsidy.
The result will see even more people pushed onto slow, dirty, cramped buses..............which they'll probably try once or twice before resorting to their cars. And the buses will further clog already full rural routes.
So much for Labour's commitment to public transport
Can we keep any comments AWAY from mudslinging...........if you can't defend the decision, don't attempt to shoot the messenger!

Never seen the point of trains except for getting people into/out of city centres during rush hour - or for Friday/Sat night drinking sessions. Cars (and/or taxis) are much more efficient. So no great loss to me ... means there's less for the gov. to squander my taxes on ...

You must have the patience of a saint, buried dep in an 80 odd page document. Anything related to the gov etc and I usually don't get past the first page, ok yeah I admit sometimes even the 1st para.
Saying that don't use public transport myself, but lets face it if no-one did and everyone got out onto the roads in their cars there would most probably be total gridlock, so for that selfish reason alone can't say I agree with proposals

It's folly to close even more of the railway system, very short sighted. Longer term, like it or not, we will likely need more public transport as peak oil is reached and petrol costs become extortionate.
We don't need a Beecham II.

Too late by the sound of things.
No doubt the hidden agenda in this case is to remove the option of travelling in any other way other than by car so people can't avoid paying the soon to be introduced road charging.

Nobody really cares that trains won't be running from Scumthorpe any more. Certainly not "Lying Labour" anyway.
If a part of the rail network or any publicly funded good is massively under-utilised, it should be shut, shhurely?

the train companys are modelled on NL
they provide poor service, and are virtually acountable to no one.
they get huge wodges of farepayers money to invest in new and improved systems.
they dont deliver,
and then have the bare faced cheek to put up fares blaming poor revenue and falling passenger numbers.
