i've had three of a kind but the other player did as well so the pot was split, i've just seen a hand where both players had three of a kind but one won with a higher next card? how did i not win when i had the highest next card? can anyone explain the rules on this one please

you take yours and his best hand from the 7 cards that you have(so thats 5 cards) and the 2 other cards(obviously the other 3 were the 3 of a kind) must have been the same... thus a tie

Assuming texas holdem then if the board read:

A,5,5,k,4

and you held: 5,7 and your opponent 5,3 then it is a split pot.

This is because your 5 card hand is 5,5,5,A,K (the 7 and 4 are not used)
Your opponents hand is 5,5,5,A,K (the 4 and 3 are not used)

Ahh, you know this confused me too, seen it split before and seen it won before but basically its down to the highest 5 cards overall that you have.... that right? thought it was down to the best hand and generally who ever had the highest spare card won. Obviously wrong then....

Good to know for next time though.

no, because the only people I play with understand it the same way as me, and fyi, the 2 games we got through on Saturday, I came off winner in both

Nice one! A few mates and I play on a regular basis - it's great everyone hoys in a set mount at the start and winner takes all, that way it doesn't get too serious and we can have a laugh - oh and a few or 12.
