Default Importing a car from UK to Ireland

My uncle is popping over from Ireland this weekend, going back in one of my old Mercs and keeping it.

He's a bit of duffer and has zero knowledge of anything car, and even less knowledge of Irish rules on cars.

The car he's taking is with MOT and tax, so all legal, but what does he need to do with registering it and how long can he drive it on UK plates?

Also, what about the MOT and when would it need the Irish version of this?

Ta.

And I realise the thread title is **** about face

Yep he goes to Vehicle Registration office. Loads around so let me know where he'll be living and i'll let you know nearest one. Go there with your UK V5 Ownership Cert. Hand in. They check chassis number matches up etc. Takes 5 mins. Cost not sure. Depends on car. Older merc say about £300-400. They tell you you new reg. Go get it made up. Done. Then go get her taxed. All simple

Can you elaborate on this? Does the UK MOT mean anything in Ireland or will it need to be tested?

Can he pretend to be on holiday as so many people do in the UK with foreign licensed motors?

He can have a northern or uk registered vehicle in the south for as long as he wants, but if he is resident in the south for more than 6 months he has to register it as southern owned and pay the vrt. No MOT in the South - they pay you money to scrap crappy cars. If he wans to keep it northern reg then he MOT's it in the north using a UK addy and he can drive it in the Suth as much as he wants

Thanks for the help.

I'll pop over for a weekend in 6 months and drive it back here then as it'll still be in MOT and tax. I'll go over there in another similar vehicle for him to cruise in.

What I also meant was that it used to be when you bought a car in the UK because it was cheaper due to the previously ludicrous car tax rates in the south, then you had to have owned in the UK for more than 6 months to avoid the car tax.

That was in the days of 35% VAT etc when cars in the South were almost twice as much as those in the North/UK to buy
