Venice - recommendations
Looking to book up for a long weekend with the misses at the end of April. Whaat are peoples thoughts, recommendations, info on getting from/to airport, best method of seeing the place, good places to eat etc...
We've found quite a nice hotel, and all in for 4 nights should cost us about £370 including flights.
If anyone has hotel recommendations it would be much appreciated too.
Cheers

hehe, don't get to the basilica in the late afternoon and expect it to be open!
go to Harry's bar, where the ex pats used to hang out and where they invented the Belini - €14 each + service
we stayed in a 3* hotel for 4 nights, came back with a bag of cheap toot and spent over a grand in all.
it's expensive, but it's worth it. once.
oh, the canals stink in the summer. spring is best.

Great place!! I took Gav two years ago for his birthday and we had a fab time!! Loads to see and do, loads of great shops and we found the food really nice! We was advised by the locals not to go in the summer, they said thats when the water gets stinky!!
you'll have a great time!

i've been a couple of times. stayed at the marconi hotel in the grand canal last time. very central and handy for the river bus.
if you fly with ryan air and get the bus to "venice", don;t get hearded along with the other tourists to a taxi. queue for the river bus instead - much, much cheaper and doesn't take that much longer.
you can walk all over the place in the evenings - no need for taxis
we found the best restaurants were the ones hidden away in small squares off the beaten track
you may also with to check lunar cycles/tide heights - make sure you take the right footwear as floods are not uncommon and i think it was november when we last went there - there were raised timber walkways all over the place. st marks square was not the same with walkways as it was the last time i was there (summer - and yes it did smell!)

Be aware that it floods as well.
We went in November and everybody was wearing wellies bar us !!
There are no real street names and very little in the way of lighting, but it is a good place to get lost !

I had a good map but quite often found the street names were different to the ones on the map.
Will dig out the name of the hotel we used but it wasn't far from the station so dead easy to find.

Hi
Off this weekend so was wondering if anyone has anymore advice to offer on what's a must see, where is good (not mega bucks!) to eat, and where else to visit maybe by train (e.g. Verona?).
Did anyone book up tours etc in advance or is it easier to do it when you get there?
Cheers
