That is horrendous.

It had to happen one day - open roads - unsighted corner...

Very sad. I actually worked on this road a few months ago during a period of roadworks. As the road is straight and flat for long stretches the cars were going extremely fast making it dangerous for us to work there even though we had temporary traffic lights up. So it doesnt really surprise me when something like this happens.

I think best wait for the facts before people start posting idiotic suggestions about what happened.

Sad to read the news.

There used to be a load of us cycle to work. I couldn't help but think that at times we were a moving target for some motorists.
There was one instance where a bus overtook us and cut back in for a stop swiping 3 guys off !! The driver seemed perplexed that we should complain about his driving and shouted and swore at us through his open door.

just saw some pics on the TV news. Long straight stretch at a junction with a side road (country lane). Someone *must* have been tanking it.

yes I expect the cyclists had spread themselves across the road round a blind corner like groups of cyclists tend to do. They won't make that mistake again!

Thing is , is it practical to provide a 'cycle' lane for every road in the country..? ..and lets face it most cars ignore them anyway

Wait a bloody minute!!!!

I suggest that cyclists have their OWN cycleway and I am being slated???

Some people need to look at why they are objecting!! People have died and all they can think about is how to respond to a pslewis post .... YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES!!!!

Thanks for highlighting it Huxley!

On this occasion Im not convinced that the post is stupid. In Holland/The Netherlands cyclists moped riders and cyclists all share the red footpaths and the system works very well. I would certainly support the systems introduction here, for pedestrians and cyclists at least (but not the stupid 10 metre long red 'cycleways' built for EU grant money).

Ok, how big is Holland, and how big is the UK?? If you really think this is feasible then you are just as much a moron as pslewis.

Plus, cyclists don't pay road tax remember??? Would you be willing for your taxes to be spent on this?? I doubt it very much.

I don't hate you in the slightest, I like winding you up (ho ho ho, how appropriate).

It's just, at times, you don't know when to shut up and stop crossing the mark.

Don't think for 1 minute I don't know what you're doing here

Pete,

maybe it is the crying wolf problem.

When so many of your posts are in 'wind-up mode' and this one reads in just the same style it is perhaps hard to tell you are making a serious point for a change.

As for all the suggestions that it may be the cyclists fault - if it was your family that had just been wiped out then I suspect you might think differently. I like the approach taken in India - the largest vehicle involved in any accident is always responsible. And cars will usually come off better against a cyclist, or even a bunch of them.

I know that road, it is a very fast road, the locals do not take prisoners when they are blasting down there.

All it needs is a slightly narrow section a bit of a slide or on comming traffic and some cylists taking up the width (two abreast? ) and it would be indeed very messy.
