Default 64k Paid To Me By Accident!

I got pulled into the office today and told that they had put £64890 into my bank account by accident!

They got me to write a cheque to give the money back today, so I have got nearly 65k sat in my account for a few days

Tempting....

I amazed your bank wasn't phoning you every 5minutes regarding "investment opertunities" for newly found wealth

Had the same kind of issue with a lad who worked for me years ago. Wages payed him £200 too much then 3 months later said they were going to take it back. I looked into it and the outcome was if you can reasonable say you didnt realise the error had taken place and that you had spent the money they cant take it back. Not convinced that will be the case with £65K though

Go into your bank and see what benefits you can gain from them because you have all this money, upgrade your account, free AA recovery etc. Milk them, they arent to know it will all disappear in a few days

Same thing happened to me a few years back. The bank mixed up my small business account with that of a branch of a large national supermarket chain! It was too much money to ignore. I did inform the bank that something was amiss but it was three months before I convinced them to the point of telling them which of their customers' money it was! That was only through my own detective work - the bank didn't seem bothered until they realised they were going to lose an extremely profitable account. It seemed the mistake was made when the bank gave the supermarket branch the same account no. as mine for their credit card payments. Fun while it lasted though. I came to an agreement with the bank, they treated it as an interest free loan, I paid it back at £500 a month and I kept the interest on the money.

I assume you checked your account first to see if the funding was there before you wrote the cheque out?

You would have to wait for cleared funds before writing the cheque always takes 3 or 4 days.

as long as you agree to pay it back, couldnt you use it as an interest free loan by just paying back a couple of hundred quid a month or something...?

I suppose it really depends what sort of company you work for - if it's a small firm that can ill afford it, pay it back now - if it's a company that make a fantastic profit, let them sweat a bit.

I would suggest that keeping it would be theft...

...however if you found £65k in a bag in the High Street and returned it to its owner you could rightly claim a courtesy finders fee of 10%.

Since you found this money in your account then why not suggest a courtesy finders fee. You will make a nice tidy sum and everyone is honest.

only theft if it meets the definition of theft...and if you were to agree to pay it back in installments, surely as its in your bank accounts, thats your decision...? i know legally you do have to return it but i suspect the rightful owners of the money would have to go to court in order to get it back in one go...???
