I agree table manners are very important,to me anyway. I think also that most youngsters eat whilst watching the TV these days with their ding meal on their laps rather than having a family meal at the table .
Meal times should be seen as an important time for the family to get together and chat about the day etc.
Even read recently that a large percentage of young families dont even have a dining table to eat off.
I never eat off my lap even if I'm late coming home and am eating alone.

It matters, of course it matters ...........
How you spell matters - how you use grammar matters .... which is why so many posts on here (for example) come across as they do .....
It's the 'Image' it portrays ...
Look at this post:-
YEAH WEL I GOTTA WELL COOL MOTA AN ITZ WELL ARD AND FARST
What does that say you you? Correct! Uneducated Chimp (which is actually insulting to the monkies!)
In short - YES, IT MATTERS allright!

Muppet head how original! I think if you read pslewis post he is referring to the image portrayed by someone who types with mispelt or abbreviated text talk, Thus creating an ironic posting as his spelling is portraying an image of an uneducated person.

It is true that spelling and grammar are important. Accent should not be of any consequence but lazy and affected speech is not good to listen to. I think it is worth trying to maintain the language.

It does matter. It is very important that you know full well the correct way of etiquette.
It is not just about our accent or the way we hold our cutlery. It is about the way we interact with society in an acceptable manner. Holding on to core family values, and showing courtesey to other people. Knowing the correct ways of core interaction, so we can pass it on to our children.
It is what makes us tolerant to each other. Without it, you have no order, and no respect for others.
If you do not use "correct" behaviour infront of your own kids. Then what kind of role model do they have? And this is where we see kids in public places, no older than 5 years using more colouful an abusive language than you'd see in a southpark episode, progressing to being more abusive and disprespectful to strangers. Which all in all, is part of the slippery slope to them being yet another pathetic excuse for being a civilised human in later life. Which not even the word scum would be a worthy derogatory description of them.
There are too many people who just are ignorant to it all, and in such their vile offspring becomes an even bigger chip off the block.
Even the little things such as covering your mouth whilst coughing or sneezing - it might not do much interms of preventing germ propagation. But it is far better and more tolerable than being covered in someone elses saliva.
Eating main meals infront of the TV from a dinner tray, on occasions is not a problem in itself. However when it is routine, it is detrimental to a family, in which should show their children the correct way to sit down and have a meal. A Tv dinner to a child should be a privildge - not the other way around. We should not bring up our children allowing them to believe that Coronation Street and Eastenders is "normal" real life.
I had better stop there before I start using quotes out of "My Fair Lady"

Yes, it matters a lot, as do table manners, knowing how to behave, knowing when to button it and knowing when to say your piece. It's all part of the fabric of life, if it didn't matter, then we would all be living in caves, spitting on eachother and clubbing our wives to death if the dinner wasn't on the rock on time.

It shouldnt but in reality is so often does, we all make snap judgements based on first impressions, I like to think that I give people a chance to prove themself but often will conciously judge someone as soon as I hear the first few words out of their mouth, and it does sometimes come back to bite you on the ***.
Life would just be so much easier if everyone just spoke with an Essex accent like me.

You don't have to have great social or etiquette skills, just a minimum. Any more than that depends on how good you wanna be at the whole thing. Personally I don't really mind how good people are as long as they have at least the minimum. e.g. don't smoke into peoples faces, say please and thank you, don't smell, eat with mouth shut etc. Don't really care if they use the wrong type of fork with their lobster, that's not really important unless you're entertaining the queen or sommat, even then though

Cheers, sorry, pardon, all fine. It's the gesture of thanks that's important rather than the actual correctness of language used. Think when you let a car through and they don't wave, lift a finger, flash, give you a thanking eye contact etc. It's rude isn't it!

Part of the skills that are being lost is the ability to interact with different people in different ways.
If you have to talk to a wide section of society, you have to be able to adjust your speech etc within reason. IMHO

That's true. Something I pride myself in, is that I could conduct myself appropriately whether in a local boozer or having dinner with the Queen. The more people you are able to interract with, the better. There are plenty of snobs who wouldn't speak to the higher classes and vice versa. Life's too short.
